Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for July 23, 2019

The New Day (Big E and Xavier Woods) guest on commentary as Shane McMahon shows up to start tonight's show. After a proper introduction from ring announcer Greg Hamilton, Shane says he was happy not to see Kevin Owens' face at Raw Reunion. He brings up the fact that Kevin Owens has challenged him to a match at SummerSlam - which he states would not be complete without him - and accepts Owens' challenge. He then brings up the fact that Owens has stated on social media that he will quit WWE if he does not beat Shane McMahon at SummerSlam. Shane brings up the fact that Kevin Owens has threatened to quit almost a year ago, and uses it as a means of calling Owens a quitter before proclaiming that Owens will go down at SummerSlam and that he will have it in writing. Suddenly, Owens shows up, and admits that Shane is smart to dig up that footage before stating that was the lowest point of his career as well as a "broken-down version of him who did not want to ruffle any feathers," which is not who he is today. He also says he knew Shane would accept his challenge, because Shane wants him gone and because Shane cannot resist the spotlight, especially at SummerSlam. He then tells Shane he will not quit because he will beat the living hell out of him. Owens heads to the ring after proposing they go right now, but Shane tells him to stop if he wants his match and thinks that Owens should fight tonight in a match against Roman Reigns.

Backstage, Shane McMahon is joined by Elias and Drew McIntyre. Elias praises Shane for putting Kevin Owens in a match against Roman Reigns. Shane decides to up the ante by appointing Drew McIntyre as a special guest referee for the match. He also makes Elias the special guest timekeeper, and himself the special guest ring announcer.

Shinsuke Nakamura beats Apollo Crews. After the match, Nakamura continues to attack Crews and hits him with another Kinshasa at ringside.

Backstage, Mandy Rose tells Sonya Deville that she has talked to Shane McMahon and that they are getting a match next week. If they win, they deserve a women's tag team title match.

We hear from Ali, who says that he must rewrite his story and make it about a man who became WWE Champion, for the pen is in his hand and not "theirs" and nobody is re-writing his story but him. He says he will go down in history for his story.

It's time for Miz TV. Tonight's guest is "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels. After a recap of Raw Reunion, HBK shows up. Shawn says he has been the young guy waiting for the old guys to leave before, but last night, everybody was like family. He also says it was great to see Seth Rollins grow and mature in WWE and see him in the match he has at SummerSlam. Suddenly, Dolph Ziggler shows up and says enough with the past Superstars being happy to be here. The Miz threatens to punch him in the face, then Dolph says Shawn had the chance to go out at the greatest of all time only to shuffle back out and wave to the crowd. He calls this as embarrassing as the past Superstars and Legends last night, and says that Shawn broke his heart when he returned to the ring at Crown Jewel, saying he was "embarrassing." Shawn agrees with Ziggler on that point, but says the only thing more embarrassing is working an entire career only to be known as a "second-rate Shawn Michaels wanna-be." Ziggler is incensed, and says the only second-rate Shawn Michaels in the ring is Shawn Michaels before saying it is fitting for him to be in the ring with The Miz as he will be known for kissing ass. Miz tells Ziggler to do something about it already, since he always has to make things about him when he should be doing things for himself. Ziggler walks away, and when Shawn gets him to reconsider, Ziggler turns and inadvertently hits Miz before superkicking Shawn as Shawn checks on Miz. Miz then checks on Shawn.

Ember Moon quickly beats Charlotte Flair. Right after the match begins, Bayley shows up. Ember Moon ends up beating a distracted Charlotte Flair with a schoolkid pin. After the match, Ember Moon tosses Bayley into the ring with Charlotte. Charlotte hits Bayley with a big boot, but Ember Moon hits Charlotte with Eclipse before doing the same to Bayley.

Kofi Kingston shows up. Michael Cole replaces Big E and Xavier Woods on commentary as it announced that Byron Saxton is not here due to the loss of his father. Kofi issues a challenge to and calls out the person who he hopes will be his opponent at SummerSlam: Randy Orton. Orton shows up, and Kofi mentions that the two of them have some history before we see some footage from the November 16, 2009 Raw where Kofi hit Orton with a Boom Drop from an barricade in the crowd into a table. Kofi says that should have been the moment where he made it to the main event scene, but that did not happen and Orton used his influence to ensure he would never reach those heights again. He says it almost worked, but he kept working and discovered the power of positivity - which he says is very real - and became what Orton did not want him to be: the WWE Champion. Orton admits he used his influence to hold Kofi back, but he did him a favor as he was not ready back then and he is not ready now. He calls his WWE Championship reign a fluke, and says he did not have to work a day in his life or embarrass himself to get to where he is. He says that he has headlined Royal Rumbles, SummerSlams and WrestleManias, and says it is because of his injuring Ali that Kofi Kingston even got close to the WWE Championship in the first place. Orton then goes on to say that Kofi is not worthy of the WWE Championship, and that he can take the title from him any time he wants. Kofi proposes they face off for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. Orton accepts, and says that Kofi's eleven-year fairy tale will come to a screeching halt courtesy of the RKO. As Randy leaves, Samoa Joe shows up and gets in the ring with Kofi Kingston. Randy heads back towards the ring to get a closer look at the next match.

We get a closer look at Aleister Black, courtesy of Burger King.

Kofi Kingston beats Samoa Joe by disqualification after Randy Orton goes for an RKO on Kofi only for Kofi to deflect it. After the match, Orton hits a surprise RKO on Samoa Joe, then Kofi hits Trouble In Paradise on Orton.

Kayla Braxton interviews Finn Balor in the ring. Finn Balor says he has no idea how Bray Wyatt's mind works, but they have crossed paths before. Nevertheless, he cannot explain anything about Bray Wyatt. He says that Bray Wyatt is more twisted than ever, but he has stared fear in the eyes before. He has not backed down then, and he will not back down now. Finn then challenges him to a match at SummerSlam. Bray Wyatt then shows up on the TitanTron via his Firefly Fun House, and praises Finn Balor for his bravery while saying that "The Fiend" is not as much of a fan as he is. He states that "The Fiend" is officially accepting his SummerSlam challenge, then warns him that while Finn Balor is an extraordinary man, "The Fiend" is no man; he is an abomination of power that remembers. We then see an image of "The Fiend," then the screen goes to black.

Backstage, Sarah Schreiber is interrupted by Charlotte Flair, who calls what happened earlier tonight, being off SummerSlam and Bayley choosing Ember Moon as her opponent as a slap in the face. She asks how she can be left off SummerSlam, then demands to be at SummerSlam and says that her opponent will be better than Ember Moon while she proves she is the greatest female Superstar of all time.

For the next match, Shane McMahon is special guest ring announcer, Elias is special guest timekeeper and Drew McIntyre is special guest referee. After the bell rings, Shane McMahon mocks both Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens. Owens tells Shane he has no problem running through Roman, McIntyre, and Elias just to get to him tonight. Roman considers this a challenge and states he will "whup everybody's ass" tonight. When the match starts, McIntyre gets a little too involved as special guest referee. Roman beats up McIntyre, Owens beats up Elias, then the two of them go after Shane. The numbers game quickly catches up to both men, and Shane, McIntyre and Elias gang up on Roman before Owens grabs Shane from the outside and sends him into the barricade. Owens fights off Elias and McIntyre, then McIntyre eats a Spear from Roman and Elias eats a Stunner from Owens. Roman then gets Shane back in the ring with Owens before hitting him with the Superman Punch, then Shane eats a Stunner. After another Stunner to Shane, Owens says that if the fans thought tonight was good, he says that Shane McMahon will be made enjoyable at SummerSlam after the ass whipping he gives him that night.

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
