Generation NXT - NXT recap for January 9, 2019

Johnny Gargano shows up to start tonight's show. He wishes the fans a happy new year, and says 2018 was a bit of a roller coaster for him. Nevertheless, he reflected over the holidays and realized success is measured by two things: wins and championships. Regardless of how hard you try or how good you are, all that matters are wins and titles, and in 2019, he will be better, he will win and he will become a champion. As for Tommaso Ciampa, he and Ciampa teaming together in the steel cage was a one-time thing and that Ciampa is still a piece of trash with something that he wants. He says that there is another championship out there, and as soon as Ciampa mentioned him and Gargano side-by-side with both singles titles, Ricochet called Gargano out. Gargano says that if he wants the North American title, he will take it. Ricochet shows up shortly afterwards, and tells Gargano that if he wanted a shot at the North American title, all he had to do was ask. He then asks if Gargano will take it face-to-face or attacking him from behind in a parking lot. Ricochet then mentions that he has heard all the talk about Gargano, and reminds him that when it comes to NXT TakeOver: Phoenix, there will be only one man who retains the North American title, and it will be him. Suddenly, Tommaso Ciampa shows up and says Johnny has a point about wins and championships, but Gargano tells Ciampa to shut up, as it is about him and Ricochet and that Gargano has nothing to do with this. Aleister Black then shows up on the video screen, and tells Ciampa that he sincerely hopes that he is more concerned with him than with grooming his "little dog of water," for unlike Gargano, he poses a real threat to him. He promises to make Ciampa fade to black at NXT TakeOver: Phoenix, then the lights go out. When they come back on, Aleister is behind Ciampa, and he attacks him, starting a brawl on the stage. The brawl quickly goes to the commentary table, and Aleister chases Ciampa to the back. As Ricochet and Gargano watch, Gargano hits a surprise superkick to Ricochet's jaw.

Kendrick admits he messed with Tozawa at every opportunity, and thanks to their strange friendship, he owes it to him and pledges to help him become champion.

Mike and Maria Kanellis show up, complaining Mike hasn't had a match in five weeks. Mike thinks that Drake has no time for him. Maria says that they have been fighting for opportunities, but probably not in the right way. She hopes that any new faces coming to 205 Live are as willing to fight for opportunities as much as she is.

We hear from Lio Rush, who says that The Lucha House Party (Kalisto, Gran Metalik, Lince Dorado) won last week, not Kalisto, because Kalisto beating him one-on-one is impossible. He refuses to let that stand, and says that The Lucha House Party will feel the rush.

When asked what has changed between the last match and now, Toni Storm says that when bag things happen, people change and become better. She has beaten some of the best women in the world, but Rhea Ripley constantly reminds Toni that she did not beat her. Johnny Saint has to stand between both women before a stand-off becomes physical.

We hear from Ligero, who says that he and Joseph Conners have been up and down the road with each other for over ten years despite Conners' dismissal of him. Suddenly, "The Premiere Athlete" Tony Nese shows up. Nese says The 'Zo Train (Enzo Amore, Noam Dar, Drew Gulak, Ariya Daivari) beat some sense into him, and he wants to come back and become second-in-command. He plans to make a statement by beating Cedric Alexander down tonight.

"Gentleman" Jack Gallagher shows up. Gallagher announces that Hideo Itami is bruised, battered and not here, as he is licking his wounds from the thorough thrashing he gave him last week. When he returns, he has plans for him. He says his ribs are bruised, but he will recover. However, he cannot say the same for The Brian Kendrick, and for that, the scales of justice are not even right now. As long as The Brian Kendrick's future is in jeopardy, he will ruin Hideo Itami's life. Suddenly, Hideo Itami's music hits, and Hideo shows up. Gallagher and Hideo go at it, but Hideo quickly gets the upper hand and stops him from using his umbrella as a weapon. Hideo readies the umbrella, but Gallagher gets out of the ring and escapes through the crowd.

Cedric Alexander wishes he was Cruiserweight Champion right now, but he is not disappointed; instead, he is motivated, as he will get his rematch when Enzo Amore comes back and make his dream a reality. Goldust congratulates him on the interview, and says he is here to make sure Cedric isn't taken advantage. He tells Cedric to watch out for Enzo's mouth, as he can talk his way out of trouble and he has "The Premiere Athlete" Tony Nese in his pocket. Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for January 9, 2018

Renee Young interviews "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles in the ring to start tonight's show. Styles says that every time he steps foot in the ring, he takes pride in what he does in it. He is human and makes mistakes, and says he was trying to be sarcastic only for General Manager Daniel Bryan to take him seriously. There is a chance he can lose the WWE Championship, but there is a chance that he can beat Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. He must hit them hard and fast, but Sami and Owens know what they are doing, and the longer the match, the better their chances of winning. As for whether or not Daniel Bryan's decision was fair, he says it was not, but neither is life. He says Sami and Owens have non-title victories over him, but that does not mean they both deserve a title shot in the same match on SmackDown Live. As for whether or not Daniel Bryan is playing favorites, he doesn't know what Daniel Bryan is thinking, and he is not going to point fingers as far as what Commissioner Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan are dealing with. He cannot allow Sami and Owens to take the WWE Championship from him, and he has to beat them in the same night to retain. When that happens, there will be no doubt that SmackDown Live is the house that AJ Styles built. Before Styles can finish that statement, however, Sami and Owens show up. Owens asks the crowd to give Styles an ovation, but feels he and Sami should call him "The Regretful" or "The Remorseful" AJ Styles instead of "The Phenomenal," and says Styles is trying to backtrack from what he said last week. He says it will take a miracle for Styles to beat them both simultaneously, and Heaven does not give miracles to people like him, as he has no chance of walking out with the WWE Championship. When all is said and done, they will be the first-ever co-WWE Champions. They plan to turn "The house that AJ Styles built" into "The Kevin and Sami Show" and do whatever they want. As Sami and Owens lead a "Yep!" chant, Shane McMahon shows up. Shane says he will have to go with AJ Styles on this one, and admits the match is not fair. He is puzzled that Daniel Bryan would make such a match and why he would allow Sami and Owens another opportunity to become WWE Champion. Be that as it may, he has to back Daniel Bryan's decision to have the match at Royal Rumble for now. On the subject of handicap matches, he might as well have such a match right here tonight. Tonight, Sami and Owens will team up to take on "The Artist" Shinsuke Nakamura, Randy Orton and "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles. Backstage, Commissioner Shane McMahon meets with General Manager Daniel Bryan, who has heard what Shane has said. He thanks Shane for making a great handicap match for tonight.

Charlotte Flair and Naomi stand in Becky Lynch's corner for the next match.

Becky Lynch beats Ruby Riott with the Dis-Arm-Her in her first match since returning from injury. She celebrates in the ring with Naomi and Charlotte Flair afterwards.

Bobby Roode guests at ringside for the next match.

Mojo Rawley beats Zack Ryder to advance in the United States Championship Tournament. After the match, Bobby Roode gets in the ring and stares down with Mojo Rawley. Mojo backs away, pointing at Roode, then leaves the ring.

Jinder Mahal says that he defined 2017. For 185 days, he was WWE Champion. Nobody thought it was possible or that he was deserving of the title...except himself. As 2018 begins, he has his eyes on the United States title. He beat "The Perfect Ten" Tye Dillinger in Round 1, and he will beat Xavier Woods in Round 2. He hopes that Woods knows how to play Taps on the Trombone, for he has already lost. He says Woods is a fad, while he is forever.

We look back on September 28, 1998, when "Stone Cold" Steve Austin rode the zamboni and got Vince McMahon.

It is announced that Natalya will be teaming with "The Artist" Shinsuke Nakamura in WWE Mixed Match Challenge.

Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable show up. Gable asks if anybody knows what it takes to be a winner - the hours of training and neglecting family and friends - and become a success and show that the risks paid off and life means something. He says that if you're willing to make the sacrifice, you can hold the titles above your head. Shelton Benjamin tells the crowd that just because The University of Alabama won a national championship, that does not mean the fans won as they simply just sat there. He then goes on to say that Georgia was robbed due to a bad referee call, just like him and Gable were robbed of the SmackDown Tag Team Championships last week. Gable says they beat The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) in the ring last week and set the tag titles free from the Uso Penitentiary, when suddenly, another referee who was not part of the match shows up. As he speaks, the crowd chants "Roll Tide." They go on to say that this referee was in the match due to jealousy, and that this referee has no idea what it takes to be a winner. They say that man is no hero, that he is a thief. Shelton and Gable then say a crime was committed, and they want justice. They want the SmackDown tag team titles, because they beat The Usos and lost to instant replay. They then demand this referee come to the ring. Instead of the referee, Shelton and Gable get General Manager Daniel Bryan. Daniel says he understand the euphoria of thinking you won, and understands when you work so hard for something only for it to be taken away from you. He does not care what they say about The Usos, but there are some cold, hard rules that the roster needs to understand. He says the referee's decision is final, but Shelton insists he and Gable won the match and the tag titles. Daniel Bryan says the referee was doing the right thing after finding out he made a mistake, and management stands behind him. Gable does not care, that Daniel Bryan is taking his anger out on them, that they have beaten The Usos and won the title. He sarcastically asks if they have to beat them twice in one time. This gives Daniel an idea. At Royal Rumble, they will face The Usos again in a two-out-of-three falls match for the SmackDown tag team titles.

In the locker room, Randy Orton and "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles have a conversation. Orton asks Styles to trust him when he says they're on the same page tonight, but when he wins the Men's Royal Rumble Match, he will come for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania. "The Artist" Shinsuke Nakamura soon joins them, and says "Not so fast." He touches the title, then says "Good talk," and leaves.

Before the next match, Aiden English announces through song that he and Rusev are officially in the Men's Royal Rumble match - which Rusev asks English to call the "Rusev Rumble" - and that they will on Rusev Day.

Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango) get a surprise win on Rusev and Aiden English after Tyler Breeze manages to distract Rusev.

Backstage, Commissioner Shane McMahon meets with General Manager Daniel Bryan. Shane tells Daniel Bryan that they are not on the same page given the matches Daniel Bryan has made so far for Royal Rumble. Shane does not like the idea of Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn as co-WWE Champions, and says Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable should not have another opportunity at the SmackDown tag team titles. Shane thinks Daniel Bryan is coming off as a bit unstable, but Daniel says he can say the same of Shane. Shane says it is best to agree to disagree, and leaves Daniel alone.

You can vote for Carmella's partner among the three members of The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E, Xavier Woods) at the Mixed Match Challenge Facebook. The winner will be announced at noon Eastern Time.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, Randy Orton and "The Artist" Shinsuke Nakamura beat Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. During the match, Sami and Owens then head up the ramp to get away from the match, but Commissioner Shane McMahon shows up. Shane then makes the match a no count-outs match, then demands the match be restarted. Later, after Kevin Owens gets himself and Sami Zayn disqualified by Owens using a steel chair, Shane shows up again, and makes the match no-disqualificaton and anything goes. After this, Styles chases Owens to the back, and Nakamura and Owens then have their way with Sami.

Braun Strowman then storms in, wanting either Goldberg or Roman Reigns. Rollins starts a brawl with Strowman, and security quickly moves in to break it up.

Braun Strowman shows up before the next match, and Roman Reigns fights him. It eventually becomes a 3-on-1 beatdown that also involves Jeri-KO (Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens) until Seth Rollins shows up with a steel chair. Rollins and Reigns clean house and hit Braun with a double chair shot to the back, then Commissioner Stephanie McMahon shows up. She announces that the 2-on-1 handicap match between Jeri-KO and Roman Reigns will take place as scheduled, but Roman will be given some time to recuperate from these recent events so he doesn't have any excuses when he loses. Rusev, Lana and Jinder Mahal suddenly show up, and Rusev congratulates Shawn on the new movie before telling him to put Lana in the movie if he wants it to be successful. Shawn tells him the movie is already done, but Rusev doesn't care and tells him to use CGI. After some Golden Globe jokes and Rusev calling himself a "Bulgarian George Clooney" before saying Lana - who is more beautiful than Emma Stone - should have won some Golden Globe awards, Enzo Amore and Big Cass show up. Enzo gets out of his wheelchair and into the ring, despite his leg still being hurt, and calls Shawn the realest guy in the room before making some movie-themed jokes at Rusev, Lana and Jinder's expense, including "The Pianist" jokes. Rusev threatens to put all three of them in a wheelchair, and Cass tells Rusev that if he has a problem, they can handle it in the ring right now. Rusev accepts, then has Jinder fight for him. As she blames Foley for all of Raw's current problems - ratings and Braun Strowman's reign of terror being among them - The Undertaker finally shows up. 'Taker says he is back and entering the Royal Rumble match. He then says he answers to no one, and goes where he wants, when he wants. He says that no one controls him, then walks up to Stephanie and emphasizes on the word "no one." He says that he has now returned to the city where he has suffered his most devastating loss and The Streak came to the end, but his journey continues to the Royal Rumble match. He plans on winning the Royal Rumble and returning to the main event at WrestleMania, and if anyone stands in his way, they will rest in peace.

Honor Roll - Ring of Honor recap for January 9, 2016

The All Night Express (Kenny King and Rhett Titus) steals a victory from Roppongi Vice (Rocky Romero and Trent Barretta) when Kenny King pushes Rhett Titus out of the way of an attack by Barretta, tagging into the match in the process and getting a schoolboy pin in on an unsuspecting Barretta for the win.

The Kingdom (Adam Cole, Matt Taven, Michael Bennett, Maria Kanellis) show up. The security crew also appear, and they surround the ring. Adam Cole says they're here so that Kyle O'Reilly doesn't jump him from behind. At Final Battle, The Kingdom went to war, and Adam Cole said he did what he set out to do, and that was to beat Kyle O'Reilly and prove he could never beat him. He then focuses on Michael Bennett and Matt Taven, saying they dropped the ball by dropping the ROH World Tag Team Championships. Before he can tell them what to do to get the belt back, Bennett notices O'Reilly, who shows up with Bobby Fish. He tells Adam Cole that he and O'Reilly reinvented tag team wrestling and are the best in ROH, and that it's time to take back the tag titles. If they have to plow through The Kingdom to do it by having Nigel McGuinness make the match, then so be it. McGuinness gets on the microphone and makes The Kingdom vs. reDRagon (Fish and O'Reilly) official for next week. Suddenly, The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) appear and want in on the action, too. They take offense to reDRagon saying they're the best and that they reinvented tag team wrestling, and want a match with The Kingdom. Nigel McGuinness puts The Young Bucks into the match...and makes it a Philly Street Fight.

War Machine (Hanson and Rowe) beat The House of Truth (Donovan Dijak and J. Diesel).

After the commercial break, Truth Martini chews out Donovan Dijak, calling him the weak link of the group. Truth tells Dijak that nobody wants him to win more than he does, but when he did not do what he was told at Final Battle, it was like a slap in the face. Truth then slaps Dijak in the face. Dijak lays his hands on Truth Martini, but J. Diesel attacks Dijak. Truth Martini says he won't put his hands on him anymore, when all of a sudden Dijak overpowers J. Diesel and attacks him. Prince Nana shows up as Truth Martini tells Donovan Dijak he has been fired from The House of Truth. The crowd then cheers for Dijak.

reDRagon (Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly) can't wait to give The Kingdom (Matt Taven and Michael Bennett) a beating next week.

Dalton Castle beats "Reborn" Matt Sydal, Jay Briscoe and Moose in a Four Corners Survival Match.

Adam says they were four seeds born in the dirt, struggling and reaching for that luminous light. He says he does not need his glasses because he has 20/20 vision. Slater says that what Rose is trying to say is that they are four individuals who have found the light together. When Slater asks why Curtis Axel is pacing back and forth, Bo Dallas says their Curtis is very upset, and that they plan to take out some of their anger on The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso). From now on, they are walking the path to success together. Before Bo says that all they have to do is Bolieve, The Usos show up. Jimmy says that before you get all mad, they cannot simply come out and talk about Jey like that because they are friends on Twitter. When they get into the ring, however, Axel attacks Jimmy, then The Social Outcasts retreat.
