Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for August 1, 2017

AJ Styles retains the WWE United States Championship against Kevin Owens by reversing the pop-up powerbomb into a Victory Roll despite the referee getting hit in the face by Kevin Owens. Owens has at least one shoulder up as he tries to escape from the roll-up, but the referee does not see it and Styles retains. After the match, a member of medical checks on the referee and helps him to the back. Owens is livid.

General Manager Daniel Bryan and Commissioner Shane McMahon are talking to the referee from the match from earlier, telling him he made a bad call and should have called for another referee. Suddenly, an irate Kevin Owens shows up and yells at Shane, Daniel Bryan and the ref, and says that the referee made a bad call as one of his shoulders was up. Shane agrees, and gives Owens a rematch against AJ Styles for the WWE United States Championship at SummerSlam. Owens says that he wants a referee who has two good eyes and isn't made out of glass, and Daniel Bryan tells him he has one for him: Shane. Owens says Shane is "incompetent" and "the worst one here," but Shane says that if he is not the referee, Owens doesn't get his rematch. Owens ends up relenting, and Shane tells him to go cool off somewhere. Owens shoves a bunch of things and leaves.

The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) show up. They mock The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E, Xavier Woods) and brag about how they beat them up on their way to the ring last week, and tell The New Day to "stay in their lane."

It's time for Fashion Peaks. Tyler Breeze looks at the clues. He wants to know who trashed their office and where Fandango is. Suddenly, the lights go out and Fandango suddenly shows up. The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) show up with him, and pour maple syrup on a log. The three of them, and Breeze keeps yelling "No more metaphors!" Suddenly, Breeze wakes up in his office and notice it was a dream. He suddenly figures out who kidnapped Fandango.

Aiden English beats Sami Zayn, then Mike and Maria Kanellis show up. They make it known that they love each other and that they love the fact that Sami Zayn lost.

Becky Lynch and Naomi beat Natalya and Carmella with a Slayomission to Carmella, after Naomi escapes the Sharpshooter and reverses the Code of Silence.

Renee Young interviews Jinder Mahal, who says that he does not care who wins between John Cena and "The King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura as he will retain the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. He says he will be watching the match from his personal skybox. Jinder then says that everywhere he goes, he sees xenophobia, but the xenophobia only makes him stronger and prouder. He says that people will have no choice but to bow at his feet, for he is the Modern Day Maharaja and nobody will stop his WWE Championship reign.

Rusev beats Chad Gable with the Accolade. After the match, Rusev says that ever since he came to SmackDown Live, he was promised competition and an opponent worthy of being in the ring with him. He says that while John Cena waved his flag at Battleground, Cena still did not beat him. He then says he has no SummerSlam opponent, because everyone is afraid. Rusev gets it in the form of Randy Orton, who suddenly shows up. Orton walks around the ring and then grabs a microphone. He tells Rusev that if he was him, he wouldn't want him to get in the ring, either. Orton then gets in the ring, and tells Rusev that if he is looking for an opponent for SummerSlam, then he should look no further as he is here. Rusev then speaks whole sentences in Bulgarian, then he tries to fight him only to get hit with an RKO.

Jinder Mahal and The Singh Brothers (Samir and Sunil Singh) are seen watching the next match from the skybox.

Next week! Naomi vs. Carmella!

"The King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura beats John Cena to become the #1 contender for the WWE Championship and face Jinder Mahal for the title at SummerSlam. Cena raises Nakamura's hand after the match.

In continued coverage exclusive to the WWE Network, Baron Corbin attacks "The King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura from behind until John Cena goes after Corbin. Corbin hits Cena with a heavy right and breaks down the announce table, but when he readies the steel steps to put Cena through the table, Cena lifts Corbin up for an Attitude Adjustment and puts Corbin through the table instead. Cena and Nakamura stare down briefly, then Cene raises Nakamura's hand again.
