Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for April 2, 2021

Edge heads to the ring to start tonight's show. Edge looks back at what happened last week and what happened at Fastlane, and says that Daniel Bryan weaseled his way into the Universal Championship match. He says a tag team match with Daniel Bryan was intriguing, but it was not enough for Daniel. He also says that he was so focused on Roman Reigns that he did not see Daniel Bryan coming, and takes the blame for it, saying he should have seen an opportunist coming after being one for so long. Edge also says that he got outplayed by Daniel Bryan following Adam Pearce's decision last week, and while he may be angry at Daniel, he has to thank him, as he liked what he saw and saw "The Rated R Superstar" who comes out swinging when backed into a corner. He says that nobody - Adam Pearce, Roman Reigns or Daniel Bryan - understands the ramifications of their actions, and while he may have snapped at Fastlane, he has finally woken up and he is a man that Roman and Daniel both aspire to be and "The Rated R Superstar." Edge then says that hitting Roman and Daniel with the steel chair felt so good, and says it will happen again and when it does, he will not hesitate.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Edge, who says that he does not care if Daniel Bryan does not get badly beaten by Jey Uso in their Street Fight tonight, and that he would enjoy it if that were to happen.

Chad Gable and Otis are in the ring. Gable says he has transformed Otis into a force of nature and "unleashed his inner Alpha" with his enormous mental acumen. He says they are peaking at the right time, and when they peak, they peak hard. He says that they will outpeak Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode tonight, and that they complete their journey and win the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania, and as they do it, they will do it for the Academy.

Chad Gable, Otis, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode beat Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) in an eight-man tag team match.

Backstage, Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville are met by Paul Heyman, who says Roman has asked him to ask for a "hold harmless" agreement that makes it so that Jey Uso is not liable for anything that he does to Daniel Bryan. Sonya tells Heyman he has a good point.

Corey Graves interviews Cesaro and Seth Rollins in the ring. Cesaro says his match with Seth Rollins is the biggest match of his career, and while what Seth has said about his shortcomings may be true, he cannot fail, and sings "Swing is in the air." Rollins says that this is WrestleMania season and that he is unshakable at WrestleMania season, then mentions timeless WrestleMania moments before mentioning "The Heist of the Century" at WrestleMania 31. Cesaro says he would not be here if he could not beat Seth Rollins, and says he can win at WrestleMania. Rollins insists he is unshakable, but Cesaro says Rollins is not unswingable. Rollins forces Graves out of the ring for "giving [Cesaro] false hope" and tells Cesaro that he is at a much lower level than him, and says that he will embarrass him so much at WrestleMania that he will have no potential to fall back on before saying he will end his dreams right now. Cesaro says "Take a swing," which infuriates Rollins further before Rollins leaves the ring.

Backstage, Nia Jax, "The Queen of Spades" Shayna Baszler and Reginald confront Carmella, and Nia Jax says to Carmella "Didn't treat my guy very well, did you?"

WrestleMania 37 is 8 days away!

Nia Jax and Reginald guest on commentary for the next match.

Natalya quickly beats "The Queen of Spades" Shayna Baszler with a roll-up. After the match, Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler lay out Natalya and Tamina. The Riott Squad (Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan) show up, but they also get taken down by Nia and Shayna, and as Ruby Riott gets the Kirifuda Clutch, Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke join in on the brawl. Lana and Naomi also join in on the brawl, and they overpower Nia and Shayna before hitting stereo facebusters on Mandy and Dana. Tamina and Natalya then lay out Lana and Naomi to come out on top.

Backstage, Billie Kay hands Carmella her resume.

In footage from earlier today, Logan Paul arrives to the arena on a limo.

Sami Zayn heads to the ring for the red carpet premiere of the trailer for his documentary. He says that what is in the documentary will shock the viewers, then introduces Logan Paul. Sami Zayn thanks Logan Paul for being here, and that his being here means more people who take the conspiracy theory against him as truth. He then invites Logan to be his guest again at WrestleMania, which Logan accepts. The trailer for his documentary then premieres, and afterwards, Logan Paul says there is a lot to take in, and while it is compelling, he then brings up Kevin Owens walking up to him and telling him about Sami Zayn. Sami Zayn nearly loses it, saying he wants everything to perfect and that he does not care about what Owens thinks, only what Logan thinks. As Logan says Sami put a lot of effort into the trailer, Sami suddenly gets a Stunner from Owens. Owens tells Sami that if he keeps up with the conspiracy theories, this will keep happening to him, then tells Sami he will see him at WrestleMania.

Backstage, Edge meets with Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville, telling Pearce he made a big mistake making his match for the Universal Championship a Triple Threat Match. He then shows his approval for the Street Fight between Daniel Bryan and Jey Uso tonight, and says he will be out there on commentary.

Backstage, Kevin Owens says he hit Sami Zayn with a Stunner to send a message to anyone in or around WWE that he can Stun anyone at any time. He is then attacked from behind by Sami Zayn.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Bianca Belair. Bianca says that after she smacked the soul of Sasha Banks' body, the real Sasha Banks who would do whatever it took to prove she is the queen bee showed up. She says that there will be no excuses when Sasha loses to her. Bianca says that she has not forgotten about Carmella, saying she is the reason that everything has gone the way it was due to her former sommelier Reginald, and that she will go through her and put the "EST" in WrestleMania.

Bianca Belair beats Carmella. After the match, Sasha Banks tries to attack Bianca Belair, but Bianca Belair points at the WrestleMania sign and says "Not today" when she sees her.

We hear from King Corbin, who says that he is tired of the disrespect he gets on SmackDown. He says that when he heard about Bobby Lashley's offer to take out Drew McIntyre, he knew his time had come, and that he will take out McIntyre before taking out Lashley, forcing everyone to bow down to him.

We hear from Apollo Crews, who says that his ancestors were never more disrespected than from Big E at Fastlane, and at WrestleMania, he and Big E will face each other in a Nigerian Drum Fight - an ancient duel created by his ancestors for those who are wronged to make things right in a match with no rules with a beating so loud it sounds like a drum - where he will become Intercontinental Champion as his family and the spirits of his ancestors drum along to the sound of Big E's bones cracking from his fists and the cheers of him becoming champion.

Backstage, Edge is met by Paul Heyman, who says that the Universal Championship should have just been Edge and Roman Reigns, but Daniel Bryan had to insert himself into the match. Edge tells Heyman that he does not know what he has planned for WrestleMania, then says he is heading to the announce table to guest on commentary.

Daniel Bryan beats Jey Uso in a Street Fight with the Yes Lock after elbowing Jey with an arm with a chain wrapped around it. During the match, Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman show up to watch the match from the stage. After the match, Daniel Bryan hits Edge with a running knee before sending him head-first into the ring post three times. He the approaches the stage, ducks a chair thrown at him, hits Roman with the running knee and goes for the Yes Lock. Daniel Bryan locks the hold in on the ramp, and referees and officials have to get Daniel off of Roman.

Talking Smack: Paul Heyman uses Natalya and Tamina's family legacies to motivate them.

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
