Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for September 8, 2023

Charlotte Flair and Shotzi beat Damage CTRL (Bayley and Iyo Sky) after Asuka shows up from behind Dakota Kai and takes the WWE Women's Championship from her, distracting Bayley and Iyo Sky. After the match, Asuka and Iyo Sky have a staredown in the middle of the ring.

Backstage, Jimmy Uso talks with Paul Heyman about what happened last week. Paul Heyman tells Jimmy Uso that Solo Sikoa and Roman Reigns are not here tonight, then tells Jimmy that while he is not out, he is not fully in, but if Jimmy handles "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles tonight, he will take care of the details and hopefully bring The Bloodline back together. Paul Heyman leaves, then encounters Styles. Heyman asks Styles if he has enough problems in his life before tangling with him. Styles backs Heyman into a crate, but he is soon attacked by Jimmy Uso.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Damage CTRL (Bayley, Iyo Sky, Dakota Kai). Bayley says Asuka is not the champion and should mind her business or else Damage CTRL will put her on the shelf. Iyo says she is ready for Asuka, and that this is a challenge for the title.

LA Knight heads to the ring. LA Knight talks about on Miz TV earlier this week, then says that he did not come to WWE to play, but to make his way to the top and take out anyone in his way. He then says Miz is the one playing and that he did not need Cena's endorsement as he has always endorsed himself. Nevertheless, Cena made the three count and gave Miz a bitter pill to swallow, but if Miz wants to be a cockroach that needs to be stomped out, then he will accept his challenge. Grayson Waller suddenly shows up and asks LA Knight if what he was doing is a good idea, then brings out Austin Theory. Waller brags about being the only undefeated tag team on the roster after beating Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar and potentially the best tag team of all time, then Theory says that Knight would not have beaten Miz if it were not for Cena, who he himself beat. He also mentions that he has already beaten LA Knight and has become a two-time United States Champion at the age of 26, and says LA Knight has "just been here" before telling Knight to take in his fifteen minutes of fame before Miz wipes him out. Knight calls Waller "a mush-mouthed moron" and Theory "a cross-eyed half-wit" and says that if they want to get served, they can do it right now so that Theory can get his keister kicked tonight.

Grayson Waller guests on commentary for the next match and announces that John Cena will be on The Grayson Waller Effect next week.

LA Knight beats Austin Theory despite Grayson Waller removing a top turnbuckle cover. After the match, Waller gets in the ring, but ends up begging LA Knight off instead.

Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviews "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, who says that if he is standing, he can fight. He says Jimmy Uso can attack him from behind as many times as he wants, but nothing will stop him from tearing his head off tonight.

Backstage, Paul Heyman meets with WWE official Adam Pearce regarding AJ Styles putting his hands on him and who is being traded to SmackDown. LA Knight shows up wanting a match with The Miz, and Pearce makes it for next week. Heyman introduces himself and admits he is a huge admirer of his work, then tells him to knock first in case he is meeting with Adam Pearce. Knight, not in the mood to be patronized, says "Yeah" in a very serious tone.

Before the next match, Finn Balor says there is nobody better than The Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, "Dirty" Dom Mysterio) and tells everyone to get a good look at them, and "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio mentions Rhea Ripley is halfway around the world in India while Damian Priest says they are proud of Rhea. Priest then brags that The Judgment Day have beaten Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens and taken the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships from them, something The Bloodline and Roman Reigns could not do. Dominik then says that The Judgment Day is a family and that they are equals, and that The Judgment Day is the most dominant group in all of WWE. The Brawling Brutes (Ridge Holland and Butch) then show up, and Butch says it is fight night before Ridge Holland states that they are here to have "a banger in Bean Town" before telling The Judgment Day they have picked the worst opponents, as he has broken people like Finn Balor. He then says Butch is the one to worry about, not him, and Finn Balor points at Butch only for Butch to grab the finger and twist it.

The Judgment Day (Finn Balor and Damian Priest) retain the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships against The Brawling Brutes (Ridge Holland and Butch). During the match, Pretty Deadly (Kit Wilson and Elton Prince) are seen watching the match from backstage. After the match, Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) show up and head to the ring for a staredown with The Judgment Day. Lashley says The Bloodline may be crumbling, but he and The Street Profits will be the ones taking over.

Backstage, "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles argues with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson about their current situation with Jimmy Uso. Styles says that if this is how things are going to be, then he does not want The O.C. anywhere near his match.

Backstage, we hear from Asuka, who says Damage CTRL (Bayley, Iyo Sky, Dakota Kai) forgot that she was the champion and never got a rematch. She says that Iyo Sky has her title, but in two weeks, she is taking it back.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles beats Jimmy Uso after Solo Sikoa refuses to attack "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles for Jimmy Uso and turns his back on him. After the match, The Judgment Day (Finn Balor and Damian Priest) attack AJ Styles and hand him over to Solo Sikoa, who hits Styles with the Samoan Spike.
