Raw Deal - Raw recap for September 18, 2023

"The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes heads to the ring to start tonight's show. Cody is about to talk about "Main Event" Jey Uso when he is interrupted by "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio again for the second week in a row. Dominik says that all everyone needs to know about Jey is that when he joins The Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio) they will continue to be the most dominant faction in all of WWE. He also says that Rhea Ripley is not here after being injured by Nia Jax, but she will be back soon and she will come back better. Dominik then tells Cody that when he beats him, he will be dedicating the victory to Rhea. Cody says that Dominik beating him will probably be the thing that will get Rhea to really get into him, then says that he is getting "Urkel-Laura vibes" and that he is more into her than she is into him, and that Rhea really only has eyes for Jey Uso. Dominik says it is not like that at all, then says that when Jey Uso joins The Judgment Day, he will know that a family always has each others' backs. Finn Balor and Damian Priest then show up.

Dragon Lee is seen in the front row before the next match.

"The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes beats "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio. After the match, Dominik, Finn Balor and Damian Priest get on the ring apron, but Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens rush in and stand alongside Cody. The Judgment Day get off the ring apron and leave through the crowd. As Cody is about to head to the back, Kevin Owens asks Cody to get in the ring so they can talk. After the commercial break, Kevin Owens reminds Cody Rhodes that he did a lot of things to people in the locker room while he was part of The Bloodline, and asks why he thought it was a good idea to bring Jey Uso back. Cody says that there are some people who know why and some who do not, then says he has had a lot of roles, tasks and duties, and his job is to make these people happy. He says that Jey Uso has earned a large amount of second chances and that he deserves one, then says that Jey Uso deserves a chance to show he has changed now that The Bloodline is now down a member. Sami says that he knows Jey Uso and has been through a lot with him and what he has been through him, and while Owens does not have to give him a chance, he should just like he did with him, as it is why they became tag team champions. Owens says that he has heard what they had to say and that he will pretend he did not cost the three of them a lot, and while he cannot trust Jey Uso, he trusts both Cody and Sami and he hopes they are both right. Owens then heads to the back.

It is announced that Rhea Ripley has suffered whiplash following the Samoan Drop from Nia Jax.

Kofi Kingston beats Ivar. (Before the match, it is revealed in backstage footage from earlier today as The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) meet with WWE official Adam Pearce at Erik is not medically cleared, and that Kofi Kingston has asked for a one-on-one match before Pearce can cancel the match.)

Backstage, Jackie Redmond interviews Ricochet. Ricochet says he feels Shinsuke Nakamura sees tonight as another mind game for Seth "Freakin'" Rollins, and while he moved past him, he is fighting Nakamura after he hits him with a chair and making it personal. He says that if Nakamura wants to play mind games, then he is the cheat code and that tonight is game over.

Before the next match, WWE official Adam Pearce and numerous officials and security guards try to stop Seth "Freakin'" Rollins from going after Shinsuke Nakamura.

Shinsuke Nakamura beats Ricochet by disqualification after Ricochet hits Nakamura with a chair with Nakamura has just attacked Ricochet with on the outside. After the match, Nakamura trips Ricochet with a low drop kick from behind before hitting him with the Kinshasa. Afterwards, Nakamura smashes Ricochet's leg into the ring post with the chair, then Seth "Freakin'" Rollins shows up and attacks Nakamura. Nakamura counters with a back body drop into the chair. Security and officials have to step in again. Nakamura targets Rollins' back again, this time by sending him back-first into the announce table, before being escorted to the back and making fun of Rollins.

Backstage, Seth "Freakin'" Rollins stumbles his way into the trainer's room.

Backstage, Byron Saxton interviews Chelsea Green and Piper Niven. Chelsea says Zoey Stark and Shayna Baszler are not even a real tag team and do not have a friendship like they do. Piper Niven does not even believe they are friends, and walks away when Chelsea cannot figure out that she is from Scotland. Chelsea says they will show Zoey and Shayna what a real tag team is like, then tries to catch up with Piper.

Zoey Stark and "The Queen of Spades" Shayna Baszler vs. Chelsea Green and Piper Niven ends with Nia Jax shows up and attacks everyone. Afterwards, Nia Jax says that she will take out whoever she wants and that everyone is on notice.

Backstage, WWE official Adam Pearce is met by Chad Gable, who asks what he has to do to get another shot at Gunther. As Adam Pearce says that he has to earn his way back to the Intercontinental Championship, "Big" Bronson Reed butts in. Gable says he has made a name for himself suplexing big men like him, and Adam Pearce tells them to take it to the ring.

Backstage, Jackie Redmond interviews "Main Event" Jey Uso. Jey says he has a lot of eyes on him and a big target on his chest, and that he and Drew McIntyre are about to get physical. Damian Priest suddenly shows up and asks to speak with Jey alone. Priest asks Jey for a favor, asking him to join The Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio) and become part of the family even as the rest of the family is pulling for Jimmy. Jey says he knows all about family, but Priest says what The Judgment Day has is something special, and if he is interested, he can be the family he has been looking for. He then tells him not to make him look bad in front of the family and gives him until the end of the night for an answer.

"Big" Bronson Reed beats Chad Gable.

We hear from Tommaso Ciampa, who says that when he came to Raw, he planned to play the long game until his number was called, and as he waited, he found out that patience is a crutch, not a virtue, and that he must create his own opportunities. He says that Giovanni Vinci will tap again, then reminds Imperium (Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser, Giovanni Vinci) that he chose them, not the other way around, and that Gunther has what he wants.

Backstage, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens talk about "Main Event" Jey Uso when Jey shows up and tells him to say what he has to say about him to his face. Owens thinks that Jey is with The Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio), and if he is not, he will be with them soon enough. Sami gets in the middle of this and tells Owens to take a deep breath, and after Owens leaves, Sami tells Jey that Owens will need time to come around and that Jey has a big decision to make tonight.

Before the next match, Becky Lynch admits that while the NXT Women's Championship may have not been on her bingo card this year, one has to take opportunities while they can. She then says that she did not just want to win the title and put it on her mantle, but to defend it and take it to heights never seen before, as NXT truly represents hope, hunger, passion and progress as well as the future of the business. Becky says she wants to face the best the business has to offer, which is why she will be at NXT tomorrow night, but tonight, she is in Utah and that there are women who have worked but have not gotten that opportunity, and she is issuing an open challenge. As she says that she cannot think of a better time and place than here and now, Natalya shows up and asks her to name another woman who has worked harder than her after she took Rhea Ripley to her limit and has been waiting since. She then accepts the challenge. Becky says she has nothing against Becky and that she was hoping for someone new to answer, and that Natalya has been in WWE for fifteen years. Natalya says that she has dedicated herself for those fifteen years and has rarely gotten opportunities, and that Becky is being a hypocrite for storming into NXT and taking an opportunity from other women when she won the title, calling her "a hypocritical ginger witch." Becky accepts the challenge.

Becky Lynch retains the NXT Women's Championship against Natalya following a series of pinfall attempts.

Backstage, WWE official Adam Pearce is talking with Dragon Lee when Dominik Mysterio shows up and says he lost because Rhea Ripley was not there due to Pearce not doing his job. Dominik then confronts Dragon Lee, saying he does not like men in masks because they remind him of "[his] deadbeat dad," and that he will retain tomorrow night. Dragon Lee tells him that he will walk out of Raw next week as NXT North American Champion.

Tommaso Ciampa beats Giovanni Vinci with the Sicilian Stretch despite the distraction from Ludwig Kaiser.

Backstage, Byron Saxton interviews Seth "Freakin'" Rollins. Seth says he is tired and in a lot of pain and that he is trying to keep it together, but he is losing his mind. He says he is sick of Shinsuke Nakamura's games and that he wants him in the ring. He says that Nakamura is pushing him and wants to do things on his terms, then entertains the idea of taking his hands off the wheel and tells Nakamura that the ball is in his court. He tells Nakamura to name the time, the place and even the stipulation, then reminds him that their destinies are intertwined and asks Nakamura which of the two of them will define his legacy.

Drew McIntyre beats "Main Event" Jey Uso. During the match, The Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest, "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio) show up to watch from ringside. Near the end of the match, The Judgment Day fire Jey Uso up, with Damian Priest getting onto the ring apron, but they all get Superkicked before McIntyre hits Jey with the Claymore Kick for the win. After the match, The Judgment Day surround Jey Uso, but McIntyre notices this and stops. When The Judgment Day gangs up on Jey, however, McIntyre is conflicted. Cody Rhodes shows up and fends off The Judgment Day, who end up retreating.
