Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for September 5, 2017

It is announced that JBL has stepped down from the commentary table due to his expanding charity work, and will be replaced by Corey Graves.

Orton says he's seen more rising stars crash and burn than he counts. He wonders if the same will happen to "The King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura. Randy Orton says it can all end if one is distracted for even one minute, and that nobody will stand in his way of taking the WWE Championship back from Jinder Mahal. Nakamura respects Orton and how he can strike from nowhere. He is on his own mission to win the WWE title, and the pain he will inflict on "The Viper" will be felt everywhere.

James Ellsworth and Carmella are in the ring. Kevin Owens shows up and says that he is now the special guest referee for Carmella's match tonight with Natalya, and tries to take the referee shirt from the referee. Commissioner Shane McMahon shows up and tells Owens he will not make himself a referee like he did last week, and tells Owens (after having a brief loss for words) to stop blaming him for his losses like he did after SummerSlam and recently on SmackDown Live. Owens says he knows Shane never wanted him on the blue brand, and agrees that he doesn't want to be here either. Shane says he wants to go back to Raw because Triple H handed him the WWE Universal Championship. Owens says Shane does everything on SmackDown - including all the crazy stunts that he has done since his return - to make the show all about him, and as he does, he mentions Shane's kids. Shane tells him not to mention his children ever again. Owens then goes on to say that his whole family would have been better off if he had not survived the plane crash that happened a few months back, including his father, his wife and his kids. As soon as Owens mentions Shane's kids, Shane is true to his word and punches Owens in the face, continuing to punch him at the commentary table. Referees, Fit Finley and even General Manager Daniel Bryan all have to calm Shane down.

Kevin Owens is taken to the training room, and General Manager Daniel Bryan apologizes for Commissioner Shane McMahon's behavior. He tells Daniel Bryan to enjoy the kid while he has it, as he threatens to make this "The Kevin Owens Show" and sue WWE, Shane and even the McMahon family to make Shane regret putting a hand on him. Daniel Bryan says there's a better way to handle this. Owens agrees. He threatens to press criminal charges on Shane himself.

Before the next match, as it is announced that Natalya will defend the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship against Naomi in a rematch for the title, that next week's SmackDown Live will "Sin City SmackDown."

Natalya beats Carmella with a schoolgirl pin when James Ellsworth drops the Money In The Bank Briefcase into the ring. As Carmella tells James she is not cashing in, Natalya takes advantage of the situation. After the match, Carmella tells James Ellsworth he is the sorriest excuse for a human being she has ever met, says he is not even human, and goes so far as to call him "a genetic defect." After questioning how Ellsworth is even still employed and making fun of his supposed lack of a chin, she tells Ellsworth that he has gotten in her business for the last time and that they are through. Carmella dumps James Ellsworth.

Dolph Ziggler shows up. He says the people have no appreciation for what he does in the ring, and says they would rather sit on their hands unsatisfied. He says they do not want him, and that they would rather have a dumb gimmick. Ziggler then heads to the back, then comes back to John Cena's music and grossly exaggerates his entrance. Ziggler says the audience saw through that, then does "Macho Man" Randy Savage, complete with a blonde valet. When that doesn't work, he apologizes to the valet and hands her the "Macho Man' robe. He then tries to do Naomi's entrance, but that also falls flat. He says anybody could do any of those entrances, but nobody can do what he does in that ring. He says that if the fans don't give a damn about him, then he doesn't give a damn about the fans, and they all make him sick.

Sami Zayn interrupts Aiden English as soon as he sings the first verse of his song.

Aiden English gets an upset win on Sami Zayn after landing an Oklahoma Roll on Sami, who misses a high cross body. After the match, Aiden English sings - and runs - for his life when an angry Sami chases after him.

The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E, Xavier Woods) show up to brighten General Manager Daniel Bryan's spirits, and The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) also show up in the room. D-Bry says it is time to announce the stipulation for their match next week. The Usos announce that next week, it will be a Street Fight. After a blackjack joke by Big E, Daniel Bryan has to take a phone call, which turns serious when the person tells him to do something specific in the ring right now. Daniel Bryan complies with the request.

General Manager Daniel Bryan heads to the ring, and asks Commissioner Shane McMahon to come to the ring so he can talk to him. Shane shows up, and Daniel asks Shane what he was thinking laying his hands on Kevin Owens. He says that he had a similar incident almost happen between him and The Miz, and that he didn't hit back against The Miz because Shane told him to, and to put WWE first. Daniel Bryan says he can't put his hands on employees. Shane takes full responsibility for his action, but tells him that he goes into a blind rage when someone mentions his kids, and when it happens, there is no coming back. He asks Daniel Bryan that he will be a father soon, and to put the shoe on the other foot. Daniel Bryan does not want to hear it as Shane tells him how it would feel if someone did the same to him, and Daniel Bryan says he is more focused on putting the company first as Owens wants to sue everybody and he doesn't anyone to lose their jobs. Shane tells Daniel Bryan that he will settle things with Owens, but Daniel Bryan tells him it is too late for that and that he got a call from his father, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, stating that Shane is indefinitely suspended. Daniel Bryan leaves the ring, then Shane leaves afterward. Both microphones are laid in the center of the ring.

Renee Young interviews Jinder Mahal. He does not care who he faces, as he has beaten both Randy Orton and "The King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura. He says there is a reason The New York Times is writing about him, as he has represented Inidia better than anyone else ever could, and has proven he is the greatest WWE Champion of all time. He will be watching the main event very closely, and says "may the better man win." He then speaks to his people in his language.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles guests on commentary for the next match. It is announced that AJ Styles' gold elbow pad is up for auction right now, with the money going to Connor's Cure.

Baron Corbin beats "The Perfect Ten" Tye Dillinger with a thumb to Dillinger's throat out of the referee's sight in the corner followed by End of Days. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles stares down Baron Corbin from the commentary table after the match.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles tells "The Perfect Ten" Tye Dillinger about how Baron Corbin is a cheap shot artist backstage. He then gives Dillinger a shot at the WWE United States Championship for next week.

We see the glorious arrival of Bobby Roode to SmackDown Live.

Backstage, James Ellsworth comes across Carmella. He apologizes to her and asks for another shot, and says he will do anything she wants. Carmella tells him that from now on, they're doing things her way. She gives Ellsworth an intense kiss followed by a slap in the face.

"The King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura beats Randy Orton to earn a shot at the WWE Championship at Hell In A Cell.

General Manager Daniel Bryan tells Kevin Owens that Commissioner Shane McMahon has been suspended. Owens isn't satisfied, and says that next week, he will make SmackDown Live his personal playground and Daniel's personal nightmare. Daniel Bryan says that next week, he will bring someone in who will sort this all out: WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

Here are the top 10 moments from tonight's show!
