Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for May 7, 2019

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles shows up to start tonight's show. Styles admits he missed SmackDown Live, then mentions WWE Chairman Vince McMahon's recently adopted "Wild Card Rule" and says he wanted to be the first to crash the blue brand. Suddenly, Sami Zayn shows up and calls the Louisville, Kentucky fans "Kentucky Fried hillbillies" and showed up knowing that Styles would be here, and Styles stops him to tell him to take a shower. As Sami accuses Styles of deflection, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods show up, and Kofi tells them they can't have a party without them before reminding Styles that he does not live in SmackDown Live anymore and asking what Styles is doing here tonight. Styles says he decided to return the favor after Kofi showed up on Raw, and Kofi is about to confront Styles before Sami Zayn stops him from giving Styles a shot at the WWE Championship and tells him that the fans are not happy for him. Sami goes on to say that Kofi has fallen into the trap of constantly pleasing them by giving out title shots, and says that the only person deserving of a title shot is him, as the fans need a WWE Champion who tells them the truth whether they like it or not. Kofi and Xavier stop Sami to tell him he smells bad, and Kofi says he proved that his WrestleMania victory was not fluke before proclaiming that he is a fighting champion and that he wants to put the title on the line again tonight against either of them. Kofi then says it will not matter who he defends against, as he will still be WWE Champion.

We hear from Kevin Owens, who says that he is not here tonight because he does not feel like working on his birthday. He then says he will take the WWE Championship from Kofi Kingston at Money In The Bank.

We hear from Ali, who says that even if the light seems too far away, you must reach for it if you can see it and you must fight. He then says he plans to take back his opportunity at the WWE Championship at Money In The Bank.

Before the next match, Zelina Vega states that thousands of spectators will watch Money In The Bank to see thoroughbreds compete at their peak. Unlike the Kentucky Derby, however, there is only one thoroughbred, and it is Andrade. Andrade says that in less than two weeks, he will win the Money In The Bank Ladder Match and become "El Senor Dinero en el Banco" while Ali will become envious of his success.

Ali vs. Andrade ends with Randy Orton showing up out of nowhere and attacking both men. Zelina Vega stops Orton's attack temporarily, and even as Ali fights Orton off, Orton hits a RKO on him before doing the same to Andrade.

We see a video package of Roman Reigns' WWE career highlights.

Shane McMahon shows up. He talks about The Miz's attack on him from last night, and calls Miz's actions lamentable, deplorable and disgusting before stating that Miz will not get the job done at Money In The Bank and that he will win the steel cage match. He then focuses on the tag team division, stating that the SmackDown tag team titles were vacated due to Lars Sullivan's attack on Jeff Hardy, then states that he scoured the roster to see who would be worthy of the team before deciding on "The New" Daniel Bryan and Rowan. Daniel Bryan and Rowan show up, but as Shane is about to hand them to the tag team titles, The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) show up and invoke the Wild Card Rule before welcoming Bryan and Rowan to the Uso Penitentiary. They also state that the tag team titles have to be earned, not given, and that applies to everyone including themselves and Shane. The Usos then demand that the titles be put on the line. Shane states that he will enjoy seeing Daniel Bryan and Rowan sending The Usos back to Raw empty-handed, and that the tag team title match is official and happening right now.

We hear from Finn Balor, who is at home in Ireland. He says that the Money In The Bank Ladder Match is on his mind and that he will win the match and do something extraordinary: become the WWE and Universal Champion.

"The New" Daniel Bryan and Rowan beat The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) to win the vacant WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships!

Shane McMahon shows up again. As he talks about the Money In The Bank Ladder Match, he is suddenly attacked from behind The Miz, and he fights him all the way to the stage. Shane tries to beg The Miz off, but as Miz goes on the attack again, he is suddenly attacked by The B-Team (Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel). Miz manages to fight them off, but he is smacked with a steel chair from behind by Shane.

Backstage, "The New" Daniel Bryan and Rowan are met by Heavy Machinery. Otis congratulates them, then Daniel Bryan shakes his head and he and Rowan walk away.

Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville beat Ember Moon and Carmella. After the match, Paige, Asuka and Kairi Sane show up. Paige says she has traded up from Mandy and Sonya, and says that Asuka and Kairi will tear through the women's tag team division starting with Mandy and Sonya.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Matt Hardy, who calls Jeff Hardy's injury a heartbreak moment and that Jeff has underwent surgery and will be back better than ever. R-Truth shows up and tells Matt that Lars Sullivan is vicious and unlike anyone else he has ever faced. Suddenly, Kayla runs away, and Matt and Truth are met by Sullivan, who overpowers them.

We hear from Aleister Black, who says that if anyone has been rejected by those whose whose affirmations should be instinctual, he sits before them as both their wrath and salvation. He then apologizes for his overcompensatory need to prevail at their expense, for they are the embodiment of the sins of which he speaks. Now that he has revealed this part of himself, he asks for forgiveness for his own sins that he will seek absolution for in the form of victory.

Kofi Kingston retains the WWE Championship against Sami Zayn and "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles. During the match, Kevin Owens attacks Xavier Woods, and this almost costs Kofi Kingston the match in the form of three Blue Thunder Bombs. Kofi kicks out of all three of them and hits Trouble In Paradise to counter a Helluva Kick to retain the title. After the match, Kofi Kingston states that Kevin Owens is not in his head and that there will be hell to pay for him.

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
