Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for August 20, 2019

Randy Orton shows up to start tonight's show. He says that unlike Kofi Kingston, he is not a liar and he speaks the truth, and at SummerSlam, Kofi ran away from a fight with him in front of his family because he is stupid. He says that last week, he gave Kofi an opportunity to prove himself only to RKO him twice, because Kofi is stupid. He says that last night, he and The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) decimated The New Day (Kofi, Big E, Xavier Woods) , and the best part was forcing Kofi to watch Xavier Woods' knee get shattered, because Kofi is stupid. He then goes on to say that Kofi has failed every time and that the power of positivity can be crushed out of nowhere by an RKO. Suddenly, The New Day's music hits, but Kofi is nowhere to be seen. Orton is soon hit by a Trouble In Paradise out of nowhere. Kofi tells Orton they will find out who "the stupid one" is tonight, then grabs a chair, puts it through Orton's left foot, then goes up top only to see The Revival. He fends them off as Orton retreats.

Backstage, Shane McMahon talks with Kevin Owens, and Owens tries to find common ground with Shane as he asks him to reconsider the $100,000 fine from last week. Shane says he will take it under consideration.

Andrade beats Apollo Crews after Zelina Vega tries to stop Apollo from getting Andrade back in the ring to advance to the quarter-finals of the King of the Ring tournament.

It is announced that NXT will expand to two hours on September 18th and air live on USA Network.

Backstage, "The New" Daniel Bryan and Roawn bring someone all clad in black with a black cloth around their head into an empty room. Daniel tells them not to move from the chair, or else they will be sorry.

Backstage, Elias is playing guitar when he notices somebody near a box. He immediately recognizes the person as referee John Cone, who tells him that Drake Maverick is hiding in a box. Elias grabs Maverick and tells him to read a note. The note states that the 24/7 Championship rules have been suspended for the rest of the night so that Elias can concentrate on the King of the Ring tournament, and that there are no exceptions, as per Shane McMahon. He then places Maverick back in the box.

It's time for A Moment of Bliss. Tonight's guest is Charlotte Flair. Alexa Bliss says that she and Nikki being champions will not change anything, and that A Moment of Bliss will always feature "the less fortunate" before introducing Charlotte. Charlotte states that she took the torch from Trish Stratus, and proved to her that she is the queen of all eras and the face of the SmackDown women's division. She says that Bayley may be the champion, but she is the brand, for she is marketable and Bayley is not. After calling Bayley "an afterthought" and stating that the SmackDown Women's Championship is an afterthought because of Bayley, Bayley shows up and tells Charlotte that her words sound like a bunch of excuses. She then says that at the end of the day, she is the champion, which proves that she is better than Charlotte and that it eats Charlotte up inside. Charlotte says that her match at SummerSlam stole the show, not Bayley's, and that she has to restore the prestige of the title when she beats her at Clash of Champions. Bayley says that if this is a challenge, she accepts, and says she cannot wait to shut her mouth. Bayley then pushes Charlotte out of her chair before leaving.

In the locker room, Buddy Murphy is met by Roman Reigns. Murphy tells Roman that he is "pretty sure" that he saw Rowan, and that he is just trying to help him. Roman tells Murphy that if he finds out he is lying again, he will whup his ass.

Before the next match, "The New" Daniel Bryan calls Buddy Murphy "a cowardly liar" for being "pretty sure" he saw Rowan backstage, and says that he and Rowan will reveal the real culprit behind the attacks on Roman Reigns and prove that Murphy had something to do with it.

Backstage, Buddy Murphy is about to be interviewed when he is attacked by Rowan as "The New" Daniel Bryan calls Murphy a "cowardly, lying piece of crap." Referees and officials have to stop the attack before it gets worse.

Before the next match, Scott Dawson says that last night proved The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E, Xavier Woods) are not championship material and that they are cowards. Dash Wilder says they are afraid and that Big E was not brave enough to show his face tonight. Dawson tells Xavier Woods to make sure his knee is healed up before Clash of Champions, as he and Wilder are challenging The New Day for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) beat Heavy Machinery (Tucker and Otis).

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Chad Gable about how it's been being the underdog in WWE. As he states that his life's work has been proving doubters wrong, Shelton Benjamin places a sign on the locker room door making fun of Gable's height which states "You must be this tall to participate in the King of the Ring tournament."

It's time for Miz TV. Tonight's guest - who has requested to be on tonight's edition - is Sami Zayn. Sami admits he does not care for The Miz or his segment, but he has a lot to get off his chest. Miz mentions that Sami has not been doing too well in the ring, and Sami admits that he has been losing for months. Sami then says he had an epiphany, and that there are people on SmackDown Live who need help. He says that one of them is ready to come out right now, and that person is Shinsuke Nakamura. Nakamura shows up, and Sami states that Nakamura is an artist and a poet who cannot articulate the pain that is in his heart and soul. He says that he understands, and that he and Nakamura have a bond and understand each other, for they are "two sides of the same coin." He says that Nakamura does not have to experience that pain anymore, and if he wants to address Nakamura, he has to speak to him. Nakamura points to Sami when Miz asks him a question. When Sami laughs and says that Miz does not get it, Nakamura suddenly strikes Miz in the back of the head before ganging up on him, and Sami has to hold Nakamura back. Sami helps Miz up, then Nakamura hits Miz with a Kinshasa.

Backstage, "The New" Daniel Bryan and Rowan meet with their mystery man, and tell him that Roman Reigns is coming and finding out what he did.

Backstage, Shane McMahon meets with Kevin Owens, and tells him that he has not apologized concerning attacking Elias. Owens apologizes, and Shane says he will consider lifting the fine. Shane then tells Owens that if he attacks an official again, he will be fired.

During the match, Shane McMahon shows up to get a closer look at the match as Kevin Owens has the upper hand on Elias. Shane gets involved at ringside, lets Elias get back to the ring, then reveals he is wearing his own custom referee's shirt. Elias nearly shoves Owens into Shane, then gets the schoolkid pin and the win after Shane makes a fast count.
