Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for August 6, 2019

Charlotte Flair shows up to start tonight's show. She says that every time she steps in the ring, the fans are witnessing greatness, and while most people dream of and strive for greatness, none of them have the genetics, talent or discipline to achieve it, and they either quit, lie to themselves or do something else. She then states that her SummerSlam opponent, Trish Stratus, opted to do something else when the business was changing, and that she is only coming back because her greatness eats Trish alive and Trish was never as good as her. Charlotte says the stars of today are better than those of yesteryear, and that Trish wants glory in front of her family and people in Canada. She says she plans to shatter Trish's SummerSlam dreams, then we see a video package of Charlotte's accomplishments. It soon becomes a video package of Trish Stratus's accomplishments, much to Charlotte's chagrin, then Trish shows up. Trish says the video was played to remind Charlotte of why she is her and being given history-making opportunities. She admits she has dreamed of one more match and that it eats her, as Charlotte is the embodiment of all she has fought for. Trish says she wants one more match to prove to her family, the fans and herself, and to quote Harley Race, "there is no better feeling than to be under the bright lights." She says Charlotte may be the queen, but she is not her. Charlotte welcomes Trish to her nightmare, as she will make her down to the Queen on Sunday. Trish responds by slapping Charlotte in the face, then both women stare each other down. Charlotte then laughs and leaves.

Goldberg's music hits, but Dolph Ziggler is seen backstage heading to the ring in a parody of Goldberg's entrance.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Rey Mysterio ends before the bell rings Ziggler goes on the attack before the bell rings. Referee Charles Robinson has to call for help for Rey, then Ziggler gets his hands on Rey and hits him with another superkick. Ziggler then gets on the microphone and says another legend goes down courtesy of him, and says the rest of the legends can step up and have the same thing happen to them. If Goldberg wants to fight him at SummerSlam, then he will end his legend on Sunday and make the match his last. Suddenly, Ali shows up, checks on Rey, then immediately charges at Ziggler and attacks him. This leads to a match that takes place during the commercial break.

Dolph Ziggler beats Ali.

Kayla Braxton conducts a sit-down interview with Roman Reigns in footage from earlier today. Roman says he has been through much, especially this year, but he has always known what was going on. This time, he does not know. He states that WWE has offered him personal security, but he does things on his own, and says that this has affected him and his livelihood. He does know, however, that Samoa Joe is not the culprit, and apologizes to Samoa Joe for having his name dragged through the mud. He then says the attacker is still out there and that he wants answers tonight.

In memory of Harley Race, 1943 - 2019.

Natalya vs. Ember Moon ends in a double-count out as Natalya has Ember Moon in the Sharpshooter on the outside. After the match, Bayley shows up and shoves Natalya off Ember Moon before helping Ember Moon up.

It's time for The Kevin Owens Show. Tonight's guest is Shane McMahon. Kevin Owens begins the show by immediately calling out Shane McMahon so they can get it over with, but Shane McMahon fails to show until Owens gets impatient with him. Ring announcer Greg Hamilton gives Shane a "proper" introduction, but Owens stops it to ask Shane why his career isn't on the line, and that is because Shane can do and says whatever he wants because he is a McMahon. Owens then tries to appeal to Shane's pride and ego, and asks Shane to put his career on the line as well and be the man that he says he is, so that when he beats Shane at SummerSlam, Shane is done. Shane decides to ponder this for a moment, then says no. He then says Owens' ego is what got Owens in this mess in the first place, and says there are many ways to make him quit WWE. After listing them all - pinfall, submisson, count-out, referee stoppage or disqualification - Owens tells Shane that he just exposed to the world that he "doesn't have any balls." Shane says he has balls and brains, then decides they might as well have a prelude to Sunday. Both men clear the ring, but Elias shows up to ambush Owens. Owens fights him and Shane off, then sends Owens over the commentary table. Elias eventually gets back up, but he is the victim of a Stunner on the commentary table. Shane then gets up and cuts Owens' feet out from under him before stomping him behind the commentary table. Shane then topples the commentary table on top of Owens before attacking him again. He then places a steel chair on Owens' head before drop kicking it. Referees have to get Shane away from Owens.

Sami Zayn shows up. He says that he offered Aleister Black a gift last week in the form of a match at SummerSlam where he would expose him and unburden him of all the hype surrounding him that he cannot live up to. He then says that he got no response and that Aleister locked himself in a dark room because he is safe there, as everyone can talk about how cool he is. However, when he beats Aleister, the hype will be gone and it will terrify him. Suddenly, Aleister Black is seen. He says this match happens now, not at SummerSlam, then he is raised to the stage.

Aleister Black beats Sami Zayn.

Backstage, Shelton Benjamin is asked if he ever sees himself competing for the WWE 24/7 Championship. Shelton looks around, then says "Well..." before leaving.

It's time for Firefly Fun House. Huskus The Pig Boy is seen surrounded by candy before Bray Wyatt shows up and mocks Finn Balor for letting The Fiend in willingly. He then says it is Finn's time to hurt, and that The Fiend is coming.

We see the first commercial for WWE 2K20.

Backstage, Chad Gable is met by Elias, who tells him to keep his exercise bands away from his guitar before making fun of him for being shorter than he is by quoting Randy Newman's "Short People."

We hear from Kofi Kingston, who says he got here despite Randy Orton, not because of him. He says it is incredibly difficult to stand out in WWE, yet he did just that in 2009. He thought he would break the glass ceiling, but Randy Orton beat him and humiliated him. Since then, there were rumors that Orton used his influence to hold him, and even though he would work as hard as he could, he always wondered what it was he wasn't doing. Nevertheless, he kept at it. He then says that waiting eleven years made him more resilient and appreciative of what he had, and that the power of positivity is very real. Kofi also says he wants to inspire people, unlike Orton, who used his power to hold people down. He says that when he beats Orton, it will be vindication.

The New Day (Big E and Xavier Woods) beats "The New" Daniel Bryan and Rowan by disqualification after Rowan throws steel steps at Xavier Woods to stop a tope suicida. After the match, Daniel Bryan and Rowan continue to attack The New Day, and Woods falls victim to a running knee.

Backstage, Roman Reigns heads to the locker room and demands everyone except Buddy Murphy leave. Roman asks Buddy Murphy if he was behind the attacks on him. Buddy says he does not know who did it. Roman asks him one more time, but Buddy Murphy says that even if he knew who did it, he wouldn't tell him anything. Roman punches Buddy in the face and attacks him in response. After Roman pins him to a wall, Buddy Murphy tells him that Rowan is responsible.

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
