Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for July 2, 2021

Edge heads to the ring to start tonight's show. He says that WrestleMania was supposed to be the culmination of a ten-year story, and that he envisioned it so much that he knew it would happen until it did not. He says that the defeat rocked him and took some time, but in that time, he started to roll the match back in his head and he even watched it back. He also says that Roman Reigns likes to stretch the truth and that he missed some key points. He says he could complain about a lot of things in the match and that he would be justified in doing it, and while a younger version of him would do it, he knows there will always be obstacles and excuses. Edge says that if he didn't knock down obstacles, he would not be here right now, and that he does not stop, and now that he has been one-on-one with Roman, he knows he can beat him and that Roman knows, too, saying they both felt it. Edge puts a picture of himself choking Roman Reigns with the bottom rope on the TitanTron, calling it proof that he lives rent-free in Roman Reigns' head and that Roman knows he is the guy who has his number. He says he will beat Roman and that it is a matter of when, for he is inevitable and he will be the next WWE Universal Champion.

Backstage, Paul Heyman has watched Edge's promo. Jimmy Uso says he will tell Edge that he will have Roman Reigns' back, and that when Roman shows up, they will stab the family flag right into Edge's heart.

In a YouTube-exclusive backstage interview from last Friday, Baron Corbin says he lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in investments.

Before the next match, Baron Corbin is seen growing facial hair and with his hair starting to grow back, all of it looking unkempt. Ring announce Greg Hamilton almost calls Corbin "King Corbin," but has to correct himself and say "Baron Corbin."

Shinsuke Nakamura - now known as King Nakamura - and Big E beat Apollo Crews and Baron Corbin. During the match, Corbin finds out from Rick Boogs that his Mercedes-Benz SUV has been repossessed. A distraught, distracted Corbin falls victim to the Big Ending, and Big E wins the match for himself and Nakamura.

Bayley heads to the ring. Bayley says that Bianca's victory at Hell In A Cell is a fluke and that she proved it by pinning her last week, and that the best part was the look of loss, despair and defeat in her eyes. She says that Bianca is mentally weak and that she made holding the SmackDown Women's Championship for over a year look easy, and that Bianca is crumbling under expectations. She says that she would love to make Bianca fall apart in front of all the kids who worship her, because Bianca is nothing to her. Suddenly, Bianca Belair shows up. Bianca says Bayley needs a crack in the mouth, as she keeps beating Bayley but Bayley cannot let go and is obsessed with her. Bayley says she is in Bianca's head, and while Bianca admits it, the only way to end it is to embarrass Bayley to the point of no return. Bianca says she is over Bayley, and says that if the officials will allow it, she will put the SmackDown Women's Championship on the line in an "I Quit" Match. Bayley says she will never quit professional wrestling and that she has accomplished more than Bianca Belair ever will, and says that if Bianca can make her quit, she will quit competing altogether. She then says that Bianca quitting would be no surprise at all, as Bianca is not the champion she portrays herself to be. Bayley accepts her challenge, then Bianca laughs at her, realizing she just got more exciting at hearing Bayley say she quits.

Backstage, Jimmy Uso tells Paul Heyman that Edge is waiting to jump Roman Reigns backstage, but realizes that Edge is also waiting on him. He tells Heyman to tell WWE officials Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville to save the end of the show for him when he calls out Edge.

Kevin Owens beats Sami Zayn in a Last Man Standing Match with two powerbombers through tables and another into the ring apron to qualify for the men's Money In The Bank Ladder Match.

Backstage, Megan Morant interviews Edge, who says he knows he may be walking into a trap but does not care, because he is tired of Roman Reigns, his family and his excuses and that Roman is about to meet "a vindictive son of a bitch."

Bayley vs. Bianca Belair in an "I Quit" Match for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship is official for Money In The Bank.

Backstage, Rick Boogs makes some king-related puns at Baron Corbin, but Corbin is not in the mood.

WWE official Sonya Deville heads to the ring. She announces Zelina Vega - who has not been seen in months since her release from the company - as the next entrant in the Women's Money In The Bank Ladder Match. She says it will be a pleasure to win the Money In The Bank Briefcase and cash in on a Women's Champion while they are down, then Liv Morgan shows up. Liv Morgan shows her dissatisfaction with Zelina Vega being placed in the match without having to work for it, saying she does not even deserve to be in the match. Zelina says she has deserved it because she has competed in wrestling rings for years and can run rings around Liv Morgan. Liv slaps Zelina, then tells her to prove it and tells Sonya to make a match right now.

Liv Morgan beats Zelina Vega after Zelina Vega gets caught grabbing the tights during a roll-up and Liv reverses the roll-up into one of her own.

Backstage, Seth Rollins meets with WWE officials Sonya Deville and Adam Pearce, then gets angry with them for not promising him a Universal Championship match against Roman Reigns and giving the match to Edge. Adam Pearce says that this is because Edge did not get his one-on-one championship match, and Sonya Deville gives Seth Rollins an opportunity to qualify for the Money In The Bank Ladder Match in a match against Cesaro next week.

Otis quickly beats Angelo Dawkins.

Backstage, Jimmy Uso tells Paul Heyman that Edge is asking for it. Heyman says that Roman Reigns operates on his own time and does for those who do for him, and tells him to go out there and do what he needs to do.

Next week: King Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin in a Money In The Bank Qualifying Match!

Jimmy then calls Edge out, saying he is right here, that Roman Reigns is not here and that he can handle Edge all by himself. When Edge fails to show up, Jimmy says that Edge is not man enough to stand face-to-face with him in the ring. He says that this is not a trap and that it is just him calling him out, and tells Edge to get in the ring. Edge's entrance hits, then Edge shows up and tells Jimmy that Roman Reigns is using him like he does his entire family. He says that he has been using Jey, and that when Jey is finished, Jimmy will be next. He calls Jimmy "another one of Roman's bitches," and while Roman may have left a perfect trap, this is a trap for Jimmy, not for him. Edge then heads to the ring and brawls with Jimmy Uso, slamming him into ring posts and setting up the ring steps until Jimmy hits him with a superkick. Jimmy then starts to fight back, sending Edge into the ring steps before going for a ground-and-pound in the ring. Edge soon gets back up and hits Jimmy with a big boot and goes for a ground-and-pound assault of his own. Edge then makes Jimmy Uso tap out with a submission hold before readying the Spear, and when Jimmy gets up, Edge nails him with it. Edge then leaves the ring and grabs a chair, then stomps a piece of metal out of the bottom of it before choking Jimmy out with it like he did to Roman with the bottom rope at WrestleMania. Jimmy Uso taps out, and Edge tells Roman Reigns that he does not stop as the show fades to black.
