Raw Deal - Raw recap for May 8, 2023

The show starts by announcing that Seth "Freakin'" Rollins, Austin Theory, "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, Bobby Lashley, Finn Balor, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Damian Priest, The Miz, Sheamus, Shinsuke Nakamura and "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes are in the tournament for the new World Heavyweight Championship.

"The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes heads to the ring. Cody talks about how Jacksonville, Florida was his home during the pandemic and how he made memories with the fans, then says it is time to make one more. Cody proclaims he found out what Brock Lesnar was made of and learned that he could be defeated, and admits that while Lesnar affected his focus, his focus is back and what is next for him is the World Heavyweight Championship. We then see the bracket for the World Heavyweight Championship tournament - consisting of four Triple Threat matches in the first round - and Cody says that he will fight tooth and nail until he wins the title. After Cody says "Let the tournament begin!", Seth Rollins shows up before heading to the ring for the next match.

Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviews Damian Priest. Damian Priest says that after a brutal San Juan Street Fight, his name will live forever despite Bad Bunny doing his thing, as it took a whole island to keep him down. He says he will win the first round, then bring the World Heavyweight Championship home to The Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, Dominik Mysterio).

Seth "Freakin'" Rollins beats Shinsuke Nakamura and Damian Priest to advance to the semi-finals of the World Heavyweight Championship Tournament after hitting Nakamura with a top rope frog splash as Nakamura has Priest in a knee bar before hitting Nakamura with the Pedigree for the win.

Backstage, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci walk around backstage announcing that Imperium (Gunther, Kaiser, Vinci) is here and that Gunther will be here next week when they run into Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Sami says that he and Owens are talking strategy, but Vinci takes this as disrespect. Kaiser puts his finger in front of their faces and tells them that Gunther will put them in a bad situation and put their tag team titles in real danger. Owens sees them as "Gunther's henchmen," and Sami says that this will not be like The Bloodline and will be dealt with in one night, and that they will see them in the ring later tonight.

Mustafa Ali beats Otis after infighting on the ring apron between Chad Gable and Maxxine Dupri over whether or not Otis should do the Caterpillar.

Backstage, The Miz says he is the first-ever two-time Grand Slam champion, a real history maker and the real workhorse, and that respect will be put on his name.

We see footage of The Miz and Maryse at the Kentucky Derby last weekend.

Finn Balor beats The Miz and "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes to advance to the semi-finals of the World Heavyweight Championship Tournament after Brock Lesnar pulls Cody Rhodes out of a pinfall attmpt on The Miz following three consecutive Cross Rhodes, allowing Finn Balor to hit The Miz with the Coup de Grace to advance in the tournament. After the match, Brock Lesnar hits Cody Rhodes with an F-5 into the announce table. He then asks Cody what he wants to talk about before saying he wants to talk about his face and that Cody lucked out against him. He then says he wants to talk about a fight, and that he wants to fight Cody at Night of Champions. Lesnar then asks "Who is the coward now?" Officials then check on Cody Rhodes as Brock Lesnar leaves.

Backstage, "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes is helped to the trainer's room.

Rhea Ripley beats Dana Brooke with the Prism Lock. After the match, Rhea Ripley hits Dana Brooke with a second Riptide before putting her in the Prism Lock again. Backstage, Sonya Deville and Cheslea Green have people signing a petition for a rematch for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships when they run into Candice LeRae, Indi Hartwell and Johnny Gargano. Indi then asks Dexter Lumis for his opinion, and Dexter gives the thumbs down. Chelsea says they will regret this when they become champions.

Zoey Stark beats Nikki Cross.

Backstage, Byron Saxton interviews Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio. Rhea says that she welcomes the pressure that comes with being champion when Akira Tozawa and Xavier Woods show up laughing. After Woods says that Dominik says he got dressed with clothes from the lost and found, this leads to a match which Rhea accepts on Dominik's behalf.

Trish Stratus is seen backstage handing out missing person posters of Becky Lynch.

Trish Stratus heads to the ring. Trish says she is very concerned because Becky Lynch is missing and that after using all of her platform, Becky will eventually be found and everyone will thank her. She then says that Becky will be found crying in some damp, dark corner of Iowa with her "dumb" daughter and that Becky will not come back to Raw because it is her show and no one will steal her spotlight. Becky's entrance theme hits, then Trish laughs and says the fans are as gullible as when Becky thought that they were friends. Trish then talks about how her daughter bought a doll and wanted to call it "Becky Lynch" before Becky Lynch really shows up, this time from behind, and punches Trish in the face. Trish rolls out of the ring after Becky hits her with a Bexploder, then Becky says she is here to kick Trish's ass.

Backstage, WWE official Adam Pearce, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn are with "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes in the trainer's room.

Dominik Mysterio beats Xavier Woods after Rhea Ripley drags him away from a top rope elbow drop.

We hear from Indus Sher (Jinder Mahal, Sanga, Veer Mahaan). Jinder Mahal says Veer Mahaan and Sanga are two juggernauts united as one destructive force ready to bring unprecedented levels of pain. He says they have waited patiently for their moment to strike, and from the shadows, they emerge to shake the very foundation of Monday Night Raw.

Backstage, The Miz meets with Shinsuke Nakamura, saying they need to have each other's back, as if they did, they would still be in the World Heavyweight Championship tournament. Miz tells Nakamura to give their potential partnership a chance, and Nakamura agrees before turning it into a challenge to a one-on-one match.

Backstage, Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green are met by Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, who sign their petition before Sonya and Chelsea admit they counted on Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai, Iyo Sky) to beat Liv and Raquel for the titles.

Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviews "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes. On the subject of not being in the World Heavyweight Championship tournament that Cody says was his to win, Cody says there is nothing else to say and that this is the second time Brock Lesnar has attacked him from behind for no reason, and he hypothesizes that it is because Lesnar does not have a grip on the main event scene anymore. He says that if Lesnar wants to fight him at Night at Champions, then they can fight at Night of Champions.

Seth "Freakin'" Rollins beats Finn Balor to advance to the finals of the World Heavyweight Championship Tournament finals.
