Gold Rush, Part One - NXT recap for June 20, 2023

Wes Lee retains the NXT North American Championship against Tyler Bate after specialg guest referee Mustafa Ali fires both men up and narrowly avoids a Cardiac Kick. After the match, both Wes Lee and Tyler Bate look at Mustafa Ali strangely.

We hear from Gigi Dolin, who looks at various pieces of street art as an influence of her style as something that sets her apart from everyone else and states that wherever she walks, she can create whatever enters her mind. McKenzie Mitchell interviews Kiana James, who calls street art "a waste of real estate" as she says that she does not talk about bright colors or her feelings. Kiana states that she and Gigi Dolin are not all that different, but that unlike Gigi, she grew up and embodied success while Gigi enjoys swimming in a pool of mediocrity.

Duke Hudson hosts a pep rally for Thea Hail in the ring. Thea Hail shows up and says her heart is beating so fast right now, as next week is the fight of her life, and while everyone has had accomplishments while she graduated from high school and became a WWE Superstar. She says that she did not want to go to college and that she does not need a Master's degree, and that next week, she will become NXT Women's Champion. After Drew Gulak and Charlie Dempsey express their misgivings about Thea Hail having just graduated high school, Thea Hail thanks Andre Chase, Duke Hudson, Gulak and Dempsey before stating that she will give Tiffany Stratton a Chase University-sized ass whupping. Tiffany Stratton shows up and says Thea Hail was nobody's pick to win the battle royal and that she got lucky, and that her celebration was so cute before telling her that she is the dumbest person in the building if she thinks she will beat her to become champion. Tiffany says there is a 0% chance of winning and that Thea holding her title is "cringe," but Duke Hudson tells Tiffany that Thea will beat her at the age of 19 and that he, Chase University and the fans all believe in Thea. Tiffany says that Thea will not only not beat her, but she will not tap her out. Thea then gets Tiffany in the Kimura Lock and makes her tap out before running around in a circle with the NXT Women's Championship.

In backstage footage from last week, Joe Gacy is angry about what happened as he talks to the rest of The Schism (Rip Fowler, Jagger Reid, Ava Raine), as he feels his misfortunes are affecting orders. Jagger Reid tells him that they indeed do, and Joe Gacy tells Jagger that he is correct and that this is why The Dyad has been hitting harder than ever, and that he has to re-evalutate his actions that got them here and that togetherness is what is important. Ava says their tree will not fall from one chop, and that they cannot change what happened tonight. Backstage, Diamond Mine (Julius Creed, Brutus Creed, Ivy Nile) have seen The Schism's backstage blow-up. Julius says that they are a threat and "a legitimate cancer" to NXT and that they will send them packing.

We see footage from "NXT Anonymous" of Jacy Jayne being confronted by Lyra Valkyria, who confronts her for her words from last week. Jacy says it was just "locker room chat," but Lyra tells her she does not play games.

Malik Blade and Edris Enofe beat the team of Hank Walker and Tank Ledger and the team of Josh Briggs and Brooks Jensen in a Triple Threat Tag Team Match to become #1 contenders for the NXT Tag Team Championships next week.

Backstage, Gallus (Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey, Wolfgang) briefly talk about their match for next week, but as they are about to head to the pub, Los Lotharios (Humberto Garcia and Angel Garza) show up and say they were lucky they were not in the three-way tag team match, for if they were, they would be losing their titles to them. Gallus laughs them off and heads to the pub.

Eddy Thorpe is met by Damon Kemp, who says that in two weeks, he is bringing Raw Underground to the ring and that they will be in a ropeless 20x20 ring where the only way to win is by pinfall, knockout or submission. As they speak, Roxanne Perez passes by and attacks Blair Davenport, who takes the attack as a challenge.

Backstage, Seth "Freakin'" Rollins is met by Nathan Frazer. Both men congratulate each other on recent championship wins. As Rollins says that he knows what he is getting into and that he got the best Finn Balor, he congratulates Frazer on becoming the competitor that he has become, and tells him to take care of the people who helped him along the way. Frazer leaves, then Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams show up and introduce themselves to Rollins before the three of them have a laugh and talk about their upcoming matches.

Cora Jade beats Dana Brooke by referee stoppage. During the match, Dana Brooke tweaks her knee, and as medical staff put her on a stretcher, Cora Jade refuses to leave Dana alone and move away from the stretcher as she mocks her. Dana gets off the stretcher and continues the match as the stretcher is almost halfway up the ramp after Cora Jade grabs her by the hair. Cora Jade wins by referee stoppage after keeping Dana in the middle of the ring with a single leg crab on the injured leg.

In footage from earlier today, Von Wagner and Mr. Stone talk in an empty arena. Wagner says Mr. Stone cared about him when nobody else did, then says that as a baby, he had to get surgery to fix his skull, which was fused into place at birth due to childhood trigonocephaly, and give him a life and allow his brain to grow. He says that he was in intensive care for a week after hours of surgery and no knowledge of whether or not he would survive, and that his parents made sure that they could pay for the medical bills and live. He says that kids called him a monster because he looked different while other parents also shunned him, and all he could do was take it because he knew he looked different. Wagner then cuts the conversation short, then leaves.

Backstage, Eddy Thorpe, Scrypts, Axiom and the rest of the locker room watch footage of Raw Underground when Gable Steveson shows up and offers to be Eddy's training partner.

Baron Corbin and Carmelo Hayes meet in the ring for a face-to-face meeting. Corbin says that posing will not keep the NXT Championship and that having the title does not mean one has made it, and while Carmelo may look cool, there is nothing he can say that he has not heard or anything he can do that he has not seen. Carmelo says Corbin has never seen a title reign or the respect of the people, and Corbin says he does not care what the fans - or Carmelo - think. Carmelo says he thinks that Corbin thinks he will come to NXT and take his title and make himself relevant again, and while it is not possible, it is not probable. He says this is nothing new to him as other people on the main rosters have challenged him before and that he has sent them packing, and that there is nothing separating Corbin from the rest of them. As Carmelo says that beating him will not be a jackpot like he thinks it is, Corbin says "Happy Corbin" bought him a $1.8 million house and that his insult does not land while he has an eight-year career some people only dream of before daring Carmelo to compare lifestyles with him. Carmelo says he has done more at age 26 compared to Corbin, saying he won the Breakout Tournament while Corbin was cut from the Arizona Cardinals, and while he gave past generations of NXT credit for setting the bar high, he will not meet their expectations, as he creates expectations of his own. He also says that he has renovated and added rooms to NXT's foundation, and has repaired the roof multiple times from blowing the roof off in the ring. Corbin tells Carmelo that if he has to tell everyone he is "Him," then he is nothing and he is insignificant, which is why he barely saw him over the barricade at SmackDown. He then says that while this is the part where he cracks his jaw and leaves him laying, he will not do it, because he will beat him for the NXT Championship and place it on his mantle while he lives a lifestyle Carmelo cannot afford and say "Today was a good day."

Backstage, Valentina Feroz and Yulisa Leon get ready for their match when Dragon Lee congratulates them on their recent match last week while Nathan Frazer shows up and does the same. Feroz and Leon leave, then Frazer mentions his conversation with Seth Rollins and gives Dragon Lee a shot at the Heritage Cup.

In backstage footage from moments ago, Joe Coffey finds out that there are rats at the bar from someone calling him, then he is attacked by Channing "Stacks" Lorenzo, who then kidnaps him.

Meta-Four (Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson) beat Valentina Feroz and Yulisa Leon following the distraction from Oro Mensah, who grabs Yulisa Leon out of the air only for Valentina Feroz to take him down.

Seth "Freakin'" Rollins retains the World Heavyweight Championship against Bron Breakker. After the match, Rollins is attacked from behind by Finn Balor, who then hits Rollins with a chair after beating up the two members of security who run out to stop him. Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams run into the ring as Finn is about to hit the Coup de Grace.

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
