Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for July 17, 2020

Backstage, "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles says that he will defend the Intercontinental Championship against Matt Riddle. Last time, Riddle beat him, but this time, Riddle has no chance because he is a flash in the pan and this is the house that he built. Meanwhile, Riddle questions if the AJ in Styles' name stands for "arrogant jackass" before stating that last time was no fluke, and that he will be the bro that runs the show when he wins tonight.

Daniel Bryan predicts that Matt Riddle will become Intercontinental Champion tonight.

Alexa Bliss mentions she has a special guest on tonight's edition of A Moment of Bliss.

The Miz asks John Morrison if he is afraid of facing Braun Strowman tonight. Morrison says he is terrified, even though he says that being scared of fighting Strowman is liking being scared of fighting Jean-Claude Van Damme on a yacht. Meanwhile, Strowman says the horror show starts tonight, and he hopes Bray Wyatt is watching.

Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura look forward to Cesaro beating Big E tonight to pick the stipulation for Extreme Rules. Kofi says that Cesaro will not be Big E, and Big E says that his fist is Lois Lane to "The Swiss Superman."

Cesaro beats Big E and is able to pick the stipuation for his and Shinsuke Nakamura's match against The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) at Extreme Rules. After the match, Nakamura and Cesaro look for a table underneath the ring, but Kofi Kingston takes them down. Kofi sets the table underneath the ring up, but Nakamura saves Cesaro before he and Big E can put Cesaro through it.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews King Corbin, who says that AJ Styles is one of the best to step into the ring and that it will be a quick, decisive victory for him, and while Riddle is ambitious, he is in the honeymoon phase. He says that Riddle is playing and fire and he will get burned, and tonight, "the Bro will find out he is nothing but a little boy."

Backstage, Cesaro says he and Shinsuke Nakamura have gotten the respect that they deserved. Nakamura says that the steel cage is bone-breaking and unforgiving, but Cesaro says he enjoyed putting The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) through a table and would love to repeat it. Cesaro and Nakamura agree that their match against The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) at Extreme Rules will be a Tables Match.

It's time for A Moment of Bliss. Alexa Bliss gives the women of WWE a huge round of applause for the fifth anniversary of the Women's Revolution, then predicts that the Los Angeles Lakers will win the NBA Championship and that Matt Riddle will become champion. She also predicts that Strowman will beat Bray Wyatt at Extreme Rules, and that her special mystery guest will tear the roof off on Sunday. Nikki predicts the special guest is her, and says she will beat Bayley on Sunday, but Alexa says it's not her. Suddenly, Bayley and Sasha Banks show up, and Bayley tells Nikki Cross that she will be a failure on Sunday before Sasha Banks says that Nikki will be back in Alexa's shadow. Bayley then says that she and Sasha are the architects of the Women's Revolution with their first WWE Women's Tag Team Championship reign, then she and Sasha get in the ring and Bayley says she and Sasha will hold all the women's gold. Alexa then reveals that her mystery guest is Asuka, who shows up, then Bayley and Sasha attack Alexa and Nikki. Asuka runs in and joins Alexa and Nikki, forcing Bayley and Sasha to retreat. This starts a match.

Matt Riddle trains with Drew Gulak backstage.

We hear from Daniel Bryan in footage from earlier today. Daniel says "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles has been forced to become a fighting champion and can be a good one if he embraces the opportunity, but if he is not careful, his reign will be a short one. Daniel Bryan also hints that Drew Gulak is helping Matt Riddle get ready for tonight.

Bayley and Sasha Banks beat Asuka and Nikki Cross after Bayley uses the ropes for leverage after stacking Nikki up to counter a Tornado DDT off the ring post.

Backstage, The Miz tells John Morrison that Braun Strowman is not the scary guy he is displayed as and that they are movie guys and that the good guys always win. Morrison proposes that Miz be at ringside.

It's time for Firefly Fun House. Bray Wyatt is at the swamp, and says that the calmness is a camouflage of the danger that lies beneath. He says that Braun Strowman was a lost sheep looking for a home when he first met him, and he found it. He says that Strowman looked the devil in the eye, and he made him into a monster. All of a sudden, Strowman left, or so he thought, because the swamp is a place where darkness comes to life, and once you enter, you never truly leave. He says that a part of a person lives in the swamp forever, and that he knows that the monster he created in Strowman is scratching and waiting to come home, as it still lives within him. Bray Wyatt says that Strowman cannot handle being on his own with what he gave him and refused to embrace the monster he became, and he must destroy the monster that Strowman has become. He then tells Strowman to come home.

Before the next match, Braun Strowman says there is a time a man must grow up and face his fears, and he will do that on Sunday when he slaps the devil in his face, as this is the only way to beat The Fiend, who is an incarnation of everything evil he has ever done. Strowman says this is the only way to beat Bray Wyatt, and that he must beat him before he becomes the fiend The Fiend as he is everything evil about him in human form. Strowman says he must go home and end Bray before Bray ends him. After chasing The Miz and John Morrison out of the ring, he hopes that Bray Wyatt is watching.

Braun Strowman beats John Morrison with the hugging submission move that he used in The Wyatt Family before hitting the running powerslam. After the match, he tells Bray Wyatt that he hopes he was watching, because he is coming home. After Strowman leaves, medical staff tend to Morrison. Morrison gets up under his own power, and heads to the back with help from The Miz.

Before the next match, Lacey Evans says that Naomi's glow will be nothing but a little sparkle.

Lacey Evans beats Naomi after tying Naomi's hair around the middle rope and hitting the Woman's Right after Naomi frees herself.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Jeff Hardy, who says that fighting a bully like Sheamus is like battling addiction, and all he can do is accept the truth, keep his feet on the ground and keep fighting. He says Sheamus regretting his own actions will be worth it. Before he can say much else, he is Brogue Kicked out of nowhere by Sheamus, who says that he will cleanse Jeff Hardy of his demons next week.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Bayley and Sasha Banks. Bayley says nobody has more momentum than her, as her titles give her more mass and in turn more momentum than Nikki Cross. Sasha says it is their destiny to win all the women's gold, and Bayley says Nikki will cry into a state of depression when she beats her Sunday. Meanwhile, Nikki tells Alexa Bliss she should have won tonight and that she will blow it on Sunday. Alexa says that is not true and that she will beat Bayley. When they see Bayley and Sasha Nikki attacks Bayley. Alexa has to pull Nikki off of Bayley.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles retains the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Matt Riddle after stacking Riddle up to counter the Bromission. Both men show respect after the match, then Riddle is attacked from behind by King Corbin, who hits Riddle with End of Days.

Here's the top ten moments from tonight's show!
