Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for July 3, 2020

Michael Cole interviews Matt Riddle in the ring to start tonight's show. Riddle says that being called up from NXT and be in a SmackDown ring is "a love child of a lot of work and a lot of dreams," that being punched by "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles was like an out-of-body experience and that he likes Styles more than Styles likes him. He says that he could get used to celebrations like the one from two weeks ago. When asked why he fights with no boots or shoes, Riddle says he went back and forth between playing in the snow and playing in an indoor pool as a child while on vacation in Wisconsin. He says that this caused him to have frostbite, but his feet pulled through, and he never wears shoes because it gives the same burning sensation. As Cole asks more questions, King Corbin shows up. Corbin says Riddle should have just admitted he was an idiot and still is to this day, then complains about Riddle getting airtime before telling Cole to get out of the ring. He says that what Riddle did last week was disrespect, and demands he bow down to him. He tells Riddle that nobody likes him and wants him to be here, and that he wants him to pay for it. Riddle says "You do you," and Corbin tells him to be ready for a match at any moment and to have some sense slapped into him. Corbin tells him he just can't have a match against him, then tells him he has a match against John Morrison.

Baron Corbin guests on commentary for the next match.

Matt Riddle beats John Morrison. After the match, Riddle is attacked by "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, but Drew Gulak runs out and attacks Styles while referees and officials have to break up the brawl.

Backstage, Sarah Schreiber walks into an argument between King Corbin, The Miz and John Morrison. Corbin threatens to cut off Matt Riddle's career.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles retains the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Drew Gulak. During the match, Daniel Bryan chimes in on the match via Zoom.

Bayley and Sasha Banks show up. Bayley says that she and Sasha have rolled over everyone in the past week, and brags about how they are on all three brands. She then says nobody shows them any respect except for The Undertaker, whom Bayley says called her last week to tell her she is the greatest champion in WWE history. She also mentions that The Undertaker has stated that he cannot wait for Bayley to win all the titles and have her own tribute, then asks why they should wait to have the tribute when they can have it tonight. A video tribute for Bayley and Sasha plays, then Bayley and Sasha try to start some "Thank you, Bayley" and "Thank you, Sasha" chants before Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross show up. Alexa and Nikki pull out a list of their own obviously fake accomplishments, then ball them up and tell Sasha and Bayley that they sound as ridiculous as them. Sasha says that nobody has been able to touch Bayley for a year, and Nikki will not be able to do any differently. Nikki says she can take the title and become the next SmackDown Women's Champion, but Bayley and Sasha laugh at her. Alexa slaps Bayley in the face, and Sasha says that Bayley will give Alexa a preview of Extreme Rules. Alexa accepts the challenge.

Bayley beats Alexa Bliss by disqualification after Nikki Cross punches Bayley in the face after taking out Sasha Banks for interfering in the match behind the referee's back while the referee is dealing with Nikki. After the match, Nikki attacks Bayley further, but Sasha gets Bayley out of the ring and the two of them retreat.

We see a video package preview for Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt in a Wyatt Swamp Fight at Extreme Rules.

Shinsuke Nakamura beats Kofi Kingston. After the match, Cesaro comes back after being ejected during the match and pulls a table out from underneath the ring, but Big E shows up - also after being ejected during the match, and stops Cesaro from doing anything.

Next week: Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt for the Universal Championship from Money In The Bank is replayed! Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross vs. Bayley and Sasha Banks! Shinsuke Nakamura vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships!

A bartender is in the ring with numerous alcoholic drinks. Jeff Hardy shows up, and he is not impressed by what is inside of the ring. Jeff calls out Sheamus so that they can get the toast over with, and Sheamus shows up, not in the ring, but on the TitanTron at his own personal bar. Sheamus says he is doing this to give Jeff some personal space, and says that the adrenaline rush Jeff had last week is him diving back into his old ways and tells Jeff that he has a problem, not with alcohol, but with facing reality. He says that Jeff has been feelings orry for himself since losing at Backlash, and is sticking his nose in someone else's business to get over it. Sheamus says he has a solution to all his problems: the alcohol in the ring. Sheamus mockingly toasts Jeff Hardy, hoping that he passes out and that he adds to his criminal record, but Jeff calls Sheamus the sickest person he has ever met due to his mocking his struggles. Sheamus says he is here to help him, not to hurt him, and that Jeff does not have to live a lie anymore if he just dives back into the gutter. The bartender offers Jeff a drink while Sheamus tells him to "follow [his] instincts." Jeff takes the drink, then pours it on the bartender's head before smashing a bottle into the back of the man's head. He then hits the bartender with a Swanton Bomb.

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
