Generation NXT - NXT recap for April 22, 2020

In footage from earlier today, it is announced that an incident has taken place in the NXT locker room, and the room has been trashed. It is also announced that Finn Balor has been removed from tonight's main event.

Velveteen Dream is in the ring. He says "new levels, new devils," and that Finn Balor has "stood [him] up." Suddenly, Adam Cole shows up. Cole says that it is convenient for Velveteen Dream that Finn Balor is nowhere to be found and that Velveteen Dream is weaseling his way to a title shot, but he is reality and that he will never be champion. Cole says he does not know what happened to Finn Balor, but he knows what will happen to Velveteen Dream moments before the rest of The Undisputed Era (Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong) attack Velveteen Dream from behind. Suddenly, Keith Lee shows up and overpowers The Undisputed Era, forcing them to retreat before helping Velveteen Dream up.

Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez beat Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox.

Velveteen Dream and Keith Lee will face Adam Cole and Roderick Strong later tonight.

Drake Maverick's release from his WWE contract and his video reaction are mentioned. We hear from Maverick, who wants nobody to feel sorry for him, as there are people who have it worse for him and he plans to give it all he's got to become Cruiserweight Champion.

We see a vignette for Jake Atlas before the next match.

Jake Atlas beats Drake Maverick in Group A of the Interim Cruiserweight Championship Tournament. Atlas is 1-0 while Maverick is 0-1. After the match, Mackenzie Mitchell interviews Atlas, who admits he was rooting from Maverick, who gave him "a hell of a fight." He says that people will know his story and that he will become Cruiserweight Champion.

We hear from Damian Priest, who says he does not care about Keith Lee; only the NXT North American Championship. He says that Lee has handpicked opponents he knew he could beat, and says that Lee cannot beat him. He says that beating Keith Lee for the NXT North American Championship to ensure his name lives forever will be his greatest achievement.

We see vignettes for KUSHIDA and Tony Nese before the next match.

KUSHIDA beats "The Premier Athlete" Tony Nese with a Sakuraba Lock from the top rope to the mat in Group A of the Interim Cruiserweight Championship Tournament. KUSHIDA is 1-0 while Nese is 0-1.

Backstage, Mackenzie Mitchell interviews Timothy Thatcher and Matt Riddle. Riddle admits he misses Pete Dunne, and Thatcher says he and Riddle have a long way to go due to their differing philosophies. Riddle admits Thatcher reminds him of Dunne, and that the fans will soon see how much of a beautiful man Thatcher is.

We see a vignette where Scarlett Bordeaux and Killer Kross announce that they tried to warn everyone, and now, doomsday is coming and nobody can stop it. Also, Killer Kross is officially known as "Karrion Kross."

We hear from Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae. Gargano starts by talking about his wedding to Candice, and says that his entire career has been a fairy tale where he has become the heart and soul of NXT and the better man over Tommaso Ciampa. After Candice serves dinner, Gargano says he and Candice feel great and are in reality, and that NXT is a fairy tale that has turned into a wasteland where good people are taken advantage of and the horrible people get all the rewards. He then says he is tired of saying yes to everything while dirtbags like Ciampa get what they don't deserve, then Candice says it has not been any different for her, saying she was a leader for the women's division only to be deserted when she needed them most. Gargano says he and Candace will take what they deserve from now on, as they will no longer be walked on while "horrible people" have everything handed to them and people they thought were friends stabbed them in the back. He says that they will do things their way and rebuild NXT in their image as they eventually reign together as champions.

We hear from Io Shirai, who says that she has waited to face Charlotte Flair to show her just how great she is. Shirai says she will destroy the queen's castle, as she bows down to no one.

Backstage, Mackenzie Mitchell interviews Drake Maverick. He admits Jake Atlas is great, and says that every other athlete is fighting their opponent while he has to fight his opponent as well as himself. He says that maybe everyone was right about him.

Mia Yim beats Jessi Kamea. After the match, Charlotte Flair shows up wanting to know if Mia Yim wants a match with her. Mia says she has watched Charlotte grow alongside her, and accepts her challenge. Charlotte thanks Mia Yim for making her a star and being a good hand, and when they meet in the ring, she will make her a star, too.

We see a vignette for "Gentleman" Jack Gallagher.

We hear from Robert Stone, who says that he and Chelsea Green will reload and that Chelsea has everything that the rest of the women's division lacks. Chelsea says she has the total package and that she is a future champion.

El Hijo del Fantasma beats "Gentleman" Jack Gallagher in Group B of the Interim Cruiserweight Championship Tournament. Fantasma is 1-0 while Gallagher is 0-1. Mackenzie Mitchell interviews Fantasma after the match. In Spanish, Fantasma thanks the fans and promises to become the next Cruiserweight Champion.

Next week: Charlotte Flair vs. Mia Yim! Damian Priest vs. Keith Lee for the NXT North American Championship!

In footage from during the break, El Hijo del Fantasma speaks into the camera when the masked men in the SUV speed towards him. Fantasma notices them and successfully fends them off, and it is noticed that they sound like Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde.

Keith Lee and Velveteen Dream beat The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole and Roderick Strong). During the match, Damian Priest shows up and attacks Lee in the throat with a baton as Bobby Fish is being ejected from ringside. After the break, Velveteen Dream is forced to face The Undisputed Era by himself, with Keith Lee having been helped to the back. Later in the match, Dexter Lumis shows up and stands on the apron to become Velveteen Dream's tag team partner, and with his help, Velveteen Dream is able to win the match.

Here are the top ten moments for tonight's show!
