Generation NXT - NXT recap for January 8, 2020

Rhea Ripley shows up to start tonight's show. Ripley says that memories of being in the ring, becoming NXT Women's Champion and celebrating on top of the fans' shoulders are why she will never forget beating "The Queen of Spades" Shayna Baszler. Suddenly, Toni Storm shows up. Toni congratulates Ripley, then brings up beating her for the NXT UK Women's Championship before stating she will win the title again on Sunday before becoming a double champion at Worlds Collide. Toni says this is only if Ripley has the guts to accepts her challenge, which Ripley does as she says that she does not mind beating her again. Suddenly, Kay Lee Ray shows up. Kay Lee Ray says nobody believes this will happen, as there is no way Toni will take the NXT UK Women's Championship from her, much less make it to Worlds Collide. Suddenly, Io Shirai shows up. After Io Shirai dictates that the NXT Women's title will be hers, Bianca Belair shows up and says she is better than everyone else - and that Toni Storm doesn't even go here - before Candice LeRae shows up. Ripley stops Candace before she can say she wants to fight to, then says she also wants to fight before hitting Bianca Belair with the microphone. This starts a brawl that quickly sees Ripley, Toni and Candace standing tall in the ring. Afterwards, an impromptu six-woman tag team match between the team of Rhea Ripley, Toni Storm and Candace LeRae and the team of Kay Lee Ray, Bianca Belair and Io Shirai is announced for right now.

Rhea Ripley, Toni Storm and Candace LeRae beat Kay Lee Ray, Bianca Belair and Io Shirai after Belair and Shirai have an argument over who will get the pinfall. After the match, Candace LeRae hands the NXT Women's Championship to Rhea Ripley, then raises her and Toni Storm's hands.

We hear from Keith Lee, who says he has to continue to prove himself no matter how many champions he pins. He then says that is fine, as he plans to become NXT North American Champion in 2020.

Imperium (Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel) beat The Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake) to advance to the semi-finals for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviews Matt Riddle. He admits that he does not know Pete Dunne that well, but it fits the spirit of the Dusty Rhodes Classic, and after proposing they become a team, the "Bro-serweights" were born.

Austin Theory beats Joaquin Wilde.

We hear from Damian Priest, who says that winning the first main event of the year is how to live in infamy. As for winning the NXT North American Championship, that is how his name stands the test of time and lives forever.

The Undisputed Era (Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly) beat Gallus (Mark Coffey and Wolfgang) to advance to the semi-finals for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic after Adam Cole hits Wolfgang with an enzuigiri from the outside.

Johnny Gargano shows up. Gargano says he has been waiting a long time to get a live microphone and talk about Finn Balor. While he will not take away from what Finn Balor has done for NXT and how he injured him, Finn did not finish the job. He then says the main difference between him and Finn is that he chose to stay in NXT while Finn got out at the first opportunity, and he picked NXT up from where it left off and took it to the stratosphere without Finn Balor, which eats Finn Balor alive. As Gargano states that it eats Finn Balor alive that he was not needed for NXT to succeed, Finn Balor shows up and says promos are all Gargano is cleared for. He insists that Gargano is soft, and tells him he will give him his moment at NXT TakeOver: Portland.

We hear from Cameron Grimes, who says that he deserves tonight's opportunity the most and that he will be #1 contender with one Cave-In.

Next week: Alex Shelley is KUSHIDA's mystery tag team partner in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic! Also: The rest of the first round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic!

Mia Yim beats Kayden Carter.

After the match, Kayden is attacked from behind by Chelsea Green, who is accompanied by a man named Robert Stone. Stone says that 2020 is the year his brand takes over NXT, starting with the hottest free agent signing in Chelsea Green. (Robert Stone is best known as Robbie E from Impact Wrestling.)

We hear from Dominik Dijakovic, who promised his family the North American title nine months ago. He has three obstacles in his way, but the match is a formality, and the world will feast their eyes on the new North American Champion.

Next week: the NXT Women's Championship #1 contender's battle royal!

Keith Lee beats Cameron Grimes, Dominik Dijakovic and Damian Priest in a Fatal 4-Way Match to become #1 contender for the NXT North American Championship.

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
