Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for April 23, 2019

Shane McMahon shows up to start tonight's show. Shane demands that ring announcer Greg Hamilton give him a "proper" introduction - which Hamilton does - then Shane addresses Roman Reigns hitting his father, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. After a replay of the footage, Shane asks what kind of man hits another man's father like Roman did before declaring that Vince is of the greatest men to ever live before comparing hitting Vince to disgracing American flags and monuments. He also says that he cannot get the image of Roman hitting Vince with a Superman Punch out of his head, and states that there will be repercussions before pondering what to do regarding Roman. He then admits that maybe his emotions are getting the best of him and states that he and Roman will settle things right now in the ring. Shane calls out Roman and reminds Roman that he works for him. Roman shows up, then looks at his microphone before tossing it to the side. Shane does the same with his, and Elias shows up before both men fight. The standoff turns into a planned ambush from Shane, but Roman fights back. The numbers game quickly catches up to Roman, however, and Elias is able to hit Roman with Drift Away.

Backstage, Shane McMahon and Elias agree that there is more to come for Roman Reigns.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Kofi Kingston, who says that the love, support and magic the fans have given him is still with him and growing every day as he is WWE Champion. As Xavier Woods joins him in the interview, he admits that there has been a big change with Kevin Owens standing in for Big E. Owens shows up and says he knows Kofi will win his match tonight because New Day rocks.

Backstage, Zelina Vega says that Finn Balor tried to run away from her and Andrade in the Superstar Shake-Up, but there is no escape. Andrade says that he builds his legacy off of broken heroes, and wants to take the Intercontinental title and destroy the myth of Finn Balor.

Finn Balor beats Andrade when Zelina Vega's interference attempt in the form of a top rope cross body to Finn Balor backfires.

Backstage, Elias plays on his guitar and challenges Roman Reigns to a match at Money In The Bank. Shane shows up and says they should leave, then he and Elias get in a car and leave the arena.

Before the next match, Billie Kay makes fun of Paige's new partnership with Kairi Sane and Asuka, and while Peyton Royce admits Kairi got the better of her last week, it won't happen tonight.

Kairi Sane beats Peyton Royce. After the match, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville show up and patronizingly clap for Paige on the stage. Jinder Mahal and The Singh Brothers (Samir and Sunil Singh) then show up for the next match.

We hear from Aleister Black, who says that while everyone knows who he is, he says that what he is is not the same as who he is; regardless, the world as we know it will have him condemned.

Lars Sullivan attacks Chad Gable from behind before the next match can begin, then gets in the ring and chases Jinder Mahal out of the ring before decimating The Singh Brothers (Samir and Sunil Singh). Suddenly, R-Truth shows up and fights Lars, but Lars quickly makes short work of R-Truth.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Roman Reigns, who says that he will break Elias' jaw at Money In The Bank and make it so that Elias never sings again, accepting Elias' challenge in the process.

Charlotte Flair shows up. Flair says that at WrestleMania, three of the very best in the business went head-to-head for the Raw and SmackDown Women's Championships. She says that Becky Lynch won both titles, but she pinned "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey and not her, and that Ronda lost the SmackDown Women's title and not her. She demands that Becky come out and explain why she thinks she is the rightful champion when Becky did not beat her. Becky shows up and asks Charlotte Flair if she knows what "winner takes all" means before saying she didn't beat her because she was too busy beating the woman that Charlotte couldn't beat: Ronda Rousey. Becky says she has beaten Charlotte countless times and knew she could beat Ronda because she knew she could beat her, and says there is nothing Charlotte can do about walking out with both titles. Charlotte tells Becky that she didn't beat her, and says that she is in Becky's head because she is all she sees when Lacey Evans knocks her out. Becky reminds Charlotte she has been on "her worst winning streak" and asks who is in whose head, but Charlotte tells Becky her days are numbered as Becky has everything to lose and she has nothing to lose. She tells Becky that she is next in line for the SmackDown Women's title, but Becky wants new challenges and calls Charlotte "the web that management will not entangle her from." She says that even if Charlotte works her way back to title contention, she will still be "Becky Two Belts," and Charlotte says she's won gold eight times and will do it nine. Bayley suddenly shows up and says the Superstar Shake-Up was supposed to be about new challenge, but all she sees is a re-run. She says that while she can count how many times Becky beat Charlotte, Becky hasn't beaten her. Charlotte patronizingly pats Bayley on the shoulder and tells her to go to the back of the line, but Bayley tells her to stop being entitled and fight for an opportunity. Charlotte wants none of this, but Bayley shoves the microphone out of her hands.

Charlotte Flair beats Bayley to get a future title opportunity against Becky Lynch. After the match, Kayla Braxton interviews Becky Lynch backstage. Becky says that holding both women's title means pulling double duty, and she will have Lacey Evans tapping before she gets her gloves on and that she knows she can beat Charlotte Flair. She says she is not underestimating her competition; she is betting on herself, and in the end, she will still be "Becky Two Belts."

Kevin Owens and Xavier Woods guest on the special New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) commentary table for the next match.

Kofi Kingston beats Shinsuke Nakamura by disqualification after Rusev gets involved after the match, After the match, Kofi, Xavier Woods and Kevin Owens fight off Rusev and Nakamura, then Kevin Owens turns on Kofi and brutally attacks him. Woods tries to make the save for Kofi, but ends up being powerbombed into the ring apron.
