Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for February 9, 2024

We see the fallout from the WrestleMania 40 Kickoff media event, in which Roman Reigns vs. The Rock is almost official until "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes shows up and officially challenges Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 40.

WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H heads to the ring and joins Raw General Manager Adam Pearce and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis for tonight's show. He proclaims that the road to WrestleMania has taken a hard left turn and is on fire and that it feels "damn good," then states that he is here to clear up one thing. Triple H says it felt like there was some confusion in the air on the way to Las Vegas and that some people did not know their role, as some people tried to show up and insert their authority when they do not really have any. He says that he does not care where anyone sits, and that regardless of whether someone is liked or not, the answers come from one place and one place only: himself. Triple H states that the main event of WrestleMania 40, Roman Reigns will defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes. He states that there will be some people in the back who will be disappointed with the decision or will not like it, then says it does not matter if they like that decision. He then welcomes everyone to the road to WrestleMania. Nick Aldis then steps forward and states that attention must now be focused on Seth "Freakin'" Rollins and the World Heavyweight Championship. He states that all three men in the ring are in agreement that Rollins' challenger will be decided in an Elimination Chamber match at Elimination Chamber, and that there will be qualifiers to decide the potential participants in that match. Adam Pearce announces the twelve people in the six qualifying matches: Randy Orton, "Big" Bronson Reed, Kevin Owens, Logan Paul, "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, The Miz, Bobby Lashley, Ivar, Drew McIntyre, Sami Zayn, "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio and LA Knight. He states that the six matches will take place over three events, and that the first qualifier is AJ Styles vs. Drew McIntyre tonight. Drew McIntyre shows up first and thanks everyone for proving with their wallets that they feel the same as he does with CM Punk with his shirt, which he says is selling more than Punk's shirt. He says that "DM Hunk" will make a promise that CM Punk will not get one penny of the profits from his shirt, then says everyone is happy that Cody chose Roman. He says that after he tried to convince Cody verbally only to convince him physically, he says that all that is left to do is save the World Heavyweight Championship and give the fans a champion who is best for business.

LA Knight guests on commentary for the next match.

Drew McIntyre beats "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles to qualify for the men's Elimination Chamber match. During the match, LA Knight pours water on Styles, which Styles does not appreciate before McIntyre shoves Styles into Knight. Later on in the match, Styles kicks the ropes into McIntyre's groin, but when he goes for an inside cradle, Knight gets on the apron and distracts the referee. McIntyre is able to escape and hit Styles with the Claymore Kick to qualify.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Sami Zayn. Sami says the last week has proven that nothing is certain in WWE and that this is an emotional time. He says he was in the main event last year and watching the window to another big WrestleMania match close fast, and now he has a shot against a thirteen-time world champion. Sami states that if he can beat Orton, he is one step closer to a man he has never beaten in Seth "Freakin'" Rollins. He says it is a hard path, but it is still a path.

We see Pretty Deadly (Kit Wilson and Elton Prince) outside. As Elton Prince sees a cloud that looks like Queen Elizabeth II, Kit Wilson says he is angry about what Pete Dunne did to his hand. Elton Prince says it is time to show what they are all about this WrestleMania season.

Bianca Belair beats "Michin" Mia Yim to qualify for the women's Elimination Chamber match.

Backstage, Bron Breakker meets with Triple H, who tells Breakker that he is proud of him and how far he has come, and wants to see what he can do at the next level. Breakker says he is wondering which brand to go to and asks for advice, then Paul Heyman shows up and shakes Breakker's hand. Breakker leaves, then Heyman says he will be back with Roman Reigns and The Rock next week when Triple H gets irritated at Heyman for being in the room.

Bayley heads to the ring. Bayley thanks the fans for being on the journey all these years and knowing that she has the heart for this, and says that Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai, Iyo Sky, Asuka, Kairi Sane) meant everything to her. She says that she put Damage CTRL over herself over and over again and gave and gave and never asked questions, but all they did was take. She thought that they would be happy for her after she won the Royal Rumble, but they were not. She says that they laughed at her and stopped talking when she entered the room, then says that Iyo Sky will learn the hard way before Dakota Kai shows up saying she has been trying to text Bayley all week and that she did not know anything about this. Bayley tells Dakota to cut the crap because she was making fun of her alongside Kairi Sane, Iyo Sky and Asuka. Dakota says she was put in a really tough spot, but she always believed in Damage CTRL. This leads to the fans booing her. She says that Iyo Sky also believed until Asuka and Kairi Sane got in her head. Dakota tells Bayley she did not know how to tell Bayley what was going on and that she misses the original three-woman team, and that she would not be here if not for Bayley. She says that Bayley was like a mentor to her and that her plan was working, and that she was close to having it all. She thought everything with Asuka and Kairi would blow over, but it did not. Bayley asks Dakota where she stands, then Iyo Sky, Asuka and Kairi Sane show up. Dakota leaves as Iyo, Asuka and Kairi enter to get a metal folding chair, then charges at Iyo and Kairi before almost swinging at Bayley only to stop herself.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Randy Orton. He mentions Sami Zayn saying it is not a given to make it to WrestleMania and agrees, as he was watching from the sidelines last year. He says that he learned that in this business, he has always known when to strike, but he now knows how important it is to wait. Orton admits his road has taken a slight detour, but if he gets his way, he will move on to the Elimination Chamber, where the only constant is being cold, calculating and lethal.

We hear from Bobby Lashley, B-Fab and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford). Bobby Lashley says that he will beat "Big" Bronson Reed to qualify for the men's Elimination Chamber match and go on to become "The All Mighty."

Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne beat #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) to face The Judgment Day (Finn Balor and Damian Priest) for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships at Elimination Chamber.

Backstage, Byron Saxton is suddenly met by "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio, who says that The Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio, JD McDonagh) will continue to dominate at Elimination Chamber while he wins the men's Elimination Chamber match, beat Seth Rollins, and become World Heavyweight Champion. As he says he will slap the taste out of anyone he has to get through to become champion, Kevin Owens shows up and says all Dominik will do is get the worst beating of his life as he dedicates it to Rey Mysterio. R-Truth shows up and tells Kevin Owens that he should be on Raw and not to let General Manager Nick Aldis catch him, all while thinking that Owens is The Miz.

Randy Orton beats Sami Zayn to qualify for the men's Elimination Chamber match. After the match, Drew McIntyre is suddenly behind Randy Orton. Orton notices, and both men have a staredown to end the show.

This week on The SmackDown LowDown: Bianca Belair! Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne! Kevin Owens (and R-Truth)!

Here are the top ten moments from tonight's show!
