Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for January 19, 2024

Backstage, Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso are met by Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman. Roman Reigns says he has to make everything right tonight regarding his Royal Rumble match. Roman and Heyman leave, then Solo says he will fix everything.

General Manager Nick Aldis oversees a contract signing for "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. LA Knight vs. Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at Royal Rumble. Styles arrives first and immediately signs the contract, followed by LA Knight (who also immediately signs), Randy Orton (who also immediately signs) and Roman Reigns. Instead of Roman, however, Paul Heyman shows up. Heyman says that the contract for the match has yet to have been put forth to Roman's attorney; therefore, Roman will not the sign the contract on this evening. Nick Aldis says that this is absolutely fine, as the three signatures that are already on it make it so that they can wrestle for the "vacant" Undisputed WWE Championship. An incensed Heyman heads to the ring apron and tells Aldis that he is concerned about him, as he looks good despite the "mediocre" job that he does, yet has no way to sell this match to the fans, the board of direction, or Roman Reigns. As Heyman says Roman should be defending the title in a one-on-one match, LA Knight tells Heyman to shut up, sayin it should be a one-on-one match after Roman's cousins saved him before threatening to beat Heyman up. He also says that "Johnny-come-latelys" Randy Orton and AJ Styles showed up and walked into the picture, but Styles tells him that he walked over him to get his shot at Roman and lose, and that he should be lucky to be in the match. Knight tells Styles to watch the bass in his voice, then says he will become the champion and that if he has to walk over him again and be the one to leave him laying, he will do it. Styles punches Knight, and the two of them brawl their way to the stage where officials rush in to restore order. Heyman laughs at the brawl before Orton grabs his tie, twirls it around and tells him his plan will not work when he lays out Solo Sikoa tonight.

Backstage, AJ Styles tells General Manager Nick Aldis that he wants LA Knight tonight. Aldis tells him that he has his match.

Santos Escobar, Humberto and Angel (now known as Legado del Fantasma) beat The Latino World Order (Joaquin Wilde, Cruz del Toro, Carlito) after Escobar gets the blind tag and pins Carlito with a high stack-up pin.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Pretty Deadly (Kit Wilson and Elton Prince). Prince says they feel much better prepared against Tyler Bate and Butch with no mystery people showing up, and Wilson says they have been studying tape on Bate and Butch because they are "pretty, smart boys."

We hear from Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford). Lashley says The Final Testament (Karrion Kross, Scarlett, Akam, Rezar, Paul Ellering) has their attention, and Montez says this is not the smoke that The Final Testament wants. Dawkins says they have been the real monsters while The Final Testament has hidden in the dark, and Montez says that if they wanted a fight, all they had to do was ask. Lashley tells The Final Testament to name the time and place so they can show them what real intimidation looks like.

Tyler Bate and Butch - now known as Pete Dunne again - beat Pretty Deadly (Kit Wilson and Elton Prince).

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Pretty Deadly (Kit Wilson and Elton Prince). They say they were prepared for Butch, but not for Pete Dunne.

It's time for The Kevin Owens Show. Tonight's guest is Logan Paul. Logan Paul says it is not an honor to be on a "bottom of the barrel" show, then says the show is now his before thanking him for being the reason that he is in WWE. We then see footage from WrestleMania 37 where Owens gave Logan Paul a Stunner, and Logan says that he had to prove that he belonged in WWE as the crowd chants "one more time." Owens says he barely remembers giving Logan Paul a Stunner, then says that he has done this for almost 25 years and is but one of many that he has hit with the Stunner, and thought of Logan as "just another celebrity guest." He gives credit to Logan for sticking around and getting much better at wrestling than anyone would ever has thought, but as good as he is, he is not him. Logan says he is "one of one" and would rather not be one of the guys in the back, then says he is a multi-talented billionaire while "Kevin Owens is Kevin Owens." Owens says that he has heard everything Logan has said about him, then says there is a lot of things that Owens cannot mention about Logan is because Logan is "protected and sheltered" and given all the tools needed to win a title. He then says that while Logan made use of those tools to win a title, that makes him a joke that he has to end at Royal Rumble. Logan then says that Owens' right hand is protected and that Owens only knocked him out because he had a cast on. Logan then says he has knocked out everyone that he has clean and that it will only take a few seconds for him to knock Owens. Owens says that for the last ten years, he has proven that he can take a lot of punishment and can still get back up, and that there is no punch Logan can throw that can knock him out for three seconds. Owens then gives him his word that he will not have his cast on at Royal Rumble, then takes it off. When Owens turns his back to take the cast off, Logan punches Owens in the face. Owens uses the ropes to drag himself back to his feet, and when Logan sees that Owens is back up, both men brawl until Logan rams Owens' broken right hand into the ring post.

Backstage, Roman Reigns chews out the rest of The Bloodline (Paul Heyman, Jimmy Uso, Solo Sikoa). As Roman chews out Jimmy Uso, Solo intervenes and says last week was on him, and that tonight, he will show Roman that he will fix it.

Damage CTRL (Bayley, Iyo Sky, Dakota Kai, Asuka, Kairi Sane) watch the next match from ringside, with Bayley guesting on commentary.

Kayden Carter and Katana Chance beat Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn (now known as Unholy Union). After the match, Asuka and Kairi Sane dance around with the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships before handing the titles back to the champions.

We hear from The Final Testament (Karrion Kross, Scarlett, Akam, Rezar, Paul Ellering). Kross calls Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) "the yes men of the company" and that The Final Testament do not get opportunities because they are disruptors and savages. He says that they will meet face-to-face next week, and then, the world will see who the true "All Mighty" actually are.

Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviews Carmelo Hayes. Carmelo Hayes that things like what happened last week happen, and that he and Austin Theory were able to walk away from it. He says he did not win, but he did not win, and that he will ball out because he is "Him." Austin Theory and Grayson Waller show up, and Theory takes the interview as Carmelo getting rewarded with an interview in his own city. Carmelo challenges him for next week, and as Theory says he is busy, Grayson accepts on his behalf, much to Theory's chagrin.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. LA Knight ends with Jimmy Uso showing up only for Solo Sikoa to show up seconds later and jump Knight from behind before attacking Styles. After hitting Styles with a Samoan Spike, Solo immediately states "Two down...one to go!" before calling out Randy Orton.

Randy Orton beats Solo Sikoa after "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles and LA Knight beat up Jimmy Uso as he heads to wards the ring and Solo goes for a Samoan Spike only to get laid out with an RKO. After the match, Knight, Styles and Orton stare each other down, then Knight punches Styles out before Orton hits Knight with an RKO. Styles gets back up, and he gets an RKO, too. Suddenly, Roman Reigns shows up from behind Orton and hits Orton with a Superman Punch before signing the contract for his Fatal 4-Way Match at Royal Rumble. Roman then goes for a Spear, but when he charges at Orton, Orton hits him with an RKO.
