Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for June 5, 2020

Jeff Hardy shows up to start tonight's show. It is announced that Elias is currently recovering at home and could miss a couple of weeks of action. Jeff thanks WWE and SmackDown for giving him to get things off his chest, and says that last week's show was in chaos and that Elias walked away with serious injuries that could have been worse. He says that he pulled up to the Performance Center for last week's show when it felt like somebody hitting him with an anvil, and when he woke up, he was surrounded by police and smelling like alcohol, barely able to think. The events of last week caused him to wonder whether the last eight months were worth it, and he felt he could not look his family in the eye, but he is here in the WWE for a reason and he knows he is not alone. He knows that even though things were rough last week, he did not slip, and he passed all the sobriety tests and that witnesses explained to police that someone with red hair and a red beard attacked him: Sheamus. Jeff says that Sheamus tried to take everything away from him, and that he will not let him get away with it. Suddenly, Sheamus shows up. Sheamus says that Jeff Hardy never admits to responsibility and blames someone else for his own actions, and that his own fans are not only worse than him, they are enablers. He tells Jeff Hardy to be a man and admit to what he did, then says he won't because he is a junkie. He also tells him not to worry about his family about the embarrassment his family feels, as they are used to it. Jeff runs up the ramp and fights Sheamus, but Sheamus hits him with a Brogue Kick and throws him into the plastic panels above the barricade so hard that he breaks them.

Backstage, Otis and Mandy Rose come across King Corbin's throne and crown. Otis puts the crown on, then Otis and Mandy Walk away. When Corbin comes back to his throne, he finds out that his crown is missing and that Otis is wearing it.

Otis beats King Corbin by disqualification after Corbin hits Otis with a chair. After the match, Otis is not fazed by the chair, and he overpowers Corbin.

The Miz and John Morrison are in a white van outside of the Performance Center, waiting for Braun Strowman to go inside.

We hear from The Miz and John Morrison. The Miz says that everyone can relate to annoying coworkers, who are the worst, and that the fans have given them no chance against Braun Strowman, who he says is underestimating them right now just like the fans. He then says that Braun Strowman has come to work without a care in the world, but this is soon about to change. what they are about to do may be juvenile, but at the same time, it is strategic, and monsters make mistakes. Miz says that by Backlash, Strowman's life will become a living hell. When Strowman goes to make his protein shake, the water from the water bottle goes everywhere, making him angry.

Backstage, Shorty G is being interviewed when Mojo Rawley shows up and apologizes for interrupting and saying there are far more important things to discuss - like Rob Gronkowski losing the 24/7 Championship - before making a short joke at Shorty G's expense. When Shorty G turns around, he runs into Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro, and they and Mojo Rawley beat him up. They all retreat when The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) show up.

Sonya Deville attacks Laey Evans from behind before the next match.

Lacey Evans beats Sonya Deville. During the match, Sonya Deville inadvertently takes the referee out with a slingshot Sunset Flip. During the commercial break, the referee is replaced with another referee. Later on in the match, Mandy Rose suddenly shows up on the TitanTron and tells Sonya Deville she is a failure, not a fighter. This distracts Sonya and makes her angry, giving Lacey Evans the opportunity to hit the Woman's Right for the win.

The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) and Shorty G vs. Mojo Rawley, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro is made official for later tonight.

We see a vignette for Matt Riddle.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton interviews Braun Strowman, who says that The Miz and John Morrison are like two annoying mosquitoes, and as he says that they will get these hands, The Miz and John Morrison trip a slime trap. Instead of falling on Strowman, it falls on Kayla instead, and Kayla yells "Those...bastards!" before walking off.

Renee Young is in the ring. She introduces Daniel Bryan first, followed by "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles. Styles says that Daniel Bryan will call him a coward for taking his bye in the finals, and says that had it not been for Jeff Hardy, Sheamus would be standing where Daniel is right now. Daniel says Styles is a coward, but he has his own way of thinking and he has his, and he is okay with that. Styles says he took the bye because it was a smart move, and when he looks in the mirror, he sees a champion. He says that while Daniel Bryan has heart and is doing the right thing, it is stupid. Daniel says that he has known Styles long enough to know he is getting under his skin, and that they have two different visions of what it means to be champion. He says that Styles will defend the Intercontinental Championship sparingly against people he deems "not good enough," and believes he is the greatest champion in WWE, but that he is scared of someone smashing that vision, hence why he is a coward. Daniel then says he will defend the title every week against whoever he can, as he wants to push himself and he wants the fans to be excited every week knowing there is a championship match and that their favorite could beat him and become a champion. Styles says that Daniels wants a hand-out and that he does not believe in hand-outs, and would rather earn an opportunity. He also questions how Drew Gulak got to be his coach, much less a job in WWE, and chalks it up to being a hand-out. Styles then proposes reaching out and doing something unexpected: giving Drew Gulak an opportunity against him in the ring. He then tells Gulak to come into the ring for an ass whipping. When Gulak shows up, he hits Styles with a double leg takedown.

Drew Gulak beats "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles after countering the Styles Clash into a jackknife pin.

Backstage, The Miz and John Morrison approach Braun Strowman's car, then Miz pulls out a golf club and smashes the front windshield before Morrison does the same with a baseball bat.

The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Big E) and Shorty G beat Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura and Mojo Rawley.

Backstage, Braun Strowman finds out that his car has been vandalized by The Miz and John Morrison, and finds out that they are in the white van from security. The Miz and John Morrison mock Strowman, even as he looks in their security camera, then Strowman topples the van over with Miz and Morrison inside.

Jeff Hardy vs. Sheamus is official for Backlash.

Bayley and Sasha Banks beat Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross to become the WWE Women's Tag Team Champions! When Nikki reverses the Banks Statement by pinning Sasha's shoulders to the mat, Sasha reverses and pins Nikki's shoulders to the mat to win the match and the titles.
