Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown Live recap for January 1, 2019

The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E, Xavier Woods), with Big E dressed as Baby New Year, show up to start tonight's show. The New Day ring in the new year, then announce that they will all be in this year's men's Royal Rumble match. Big E then does a "Scott Steiner math" promo before Kofi announces that one of them will win the match and challenge for the WWE or Universal Championship. After joking that Brock Lesnar would never show up for the title match and Kofi mentions that he has never gotten a big shot in 11 years, Xavier Woods announces that The New Day can no longer eat pancakes due to their doctors. As Woods announces they can no longer eat pancake, Big E pulls pancakes out of his diaper and throws them into the audience. Kofi Kingston then references the new Bumblebee movie before Xavier Woods makes a Bird Box reference. Big E then announces the match between Jeff Hardy and Samoa Joe for a spot in tonight's Fatal 5-Way to determine a new #1 contender for the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble. When Big E asks who will face Samoa Joe, however, The New Day all ask "Who?" before Jeff Hardy shows up.

Samoe Joe beats Jeff Hardy to continue to tonight's Fatal 5-Way to determine a #1 contender for the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble after two Coaquina Clutches, the second of which sends Jeff Hardy into unconsciousness.

Backstage, Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon talk about the Fatal 5-Way Match when "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles shows up and refuses to apologizes for last week after Vince intentionally provoked him. He tells Vince to watch him later tonight unless he wants to see the real him right now. Shane stands up, but Vince also stands up and backs Shane off. Shane then tells Vince to be careful what he wishes for.

Kayla Braxton interviews Rusev in the ring. Rusev calls last week "the greatest Rusev Day of them all" and says that he takes pride of being United States Champion. He says he will defend the title against any opponent, and pledges allegiance to the title. As Rusev gets a "Rusev Day! U-S-A!" chant going, he is suddenly attacked by Shinsuke Nakamura. Lana gets on top of Nakamura to buy Rusev some time, and Rusev his a Machka kick on Nakamura only for Lana to take a tumble with him. As Rusev checks on Lana, Nakamura knees Rusev in the face before hitting him with a Kinshasa. Nakamura then drops the United States title onto Rusev before leaving.

Sonya Deville beats Naomi, even though Mandy Rose was Naomi's originally scheduled opponent. Before the match, Mandy removes her shirt to reveal a Jimmy Uso shirt underneath, which makes Naomi mad. Mandy Rose gets on the microphone and says she could not help but think of Naomi's husband Jimmy Uso, so she sent him a picture of herself in nothing but a white towel. The picture is shown on the TitanTron, and Sonya Deville takes advantage of the distraction to get the win.

We hear from Randy Orton, who says that Rey Mysterio found out what it was like to be one of his victims. A few more names will be added to that list, and he will soon become WWE Champion. We then hear from Rey, who says he proved to Orton that he cannot simply be pushed around, and that he is here to become WWE Champion once again. We then hear from Mustafa Ali, who wants to be the heart of SmackDown Live and says that he beat "The New" Daniel Bryan because he has heart. Four other men wants what he wants, and while he is the underdog, he has hope and heart.

The IIconics (Billie Kay and Peyton Royce) want to be Women's tag team champions. Gallows & Anderson (Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson) want to eradicate SmackDown Live of all the nerds. Shelton Benjamin says New Year's resolutions are frauds, then tears down the nearby scenery.

We hear from Samoa Joe, who says that he has become Jeff Hardy's obsession and his downfall. He then says that when he wins the WWE Championship, Jeff Hardy will be pushed deeper into his madness.

John Cena shows up for his first SmackDown Live appearance in almost a year. Cena talks his 2018, including his WrestleMania match, his children's book, his personal life playing out in front of the whole world, living in China for six months to shoot a movie and growing his hair out. After referencing the new Bumblebee movie, he then addresses why he is here. Cena admits he does not yet have a reason, but in 30 seconds, someone will tell him he is a broken-down part-time Hollywood star who should leave WWE faster than Nikki Bella left him. Cena then demands an opponent, and shortly afterwards, Becky Lynch shows up. Becky asks Cena how it feels to expect a man to show up only to get "The Man." She also tells Cena it's not as simple anymore, and while Cena has projected what the company was all about, someone new needs to fill his shoes and she is that person. She then says that if Cena has a problem with that, Nikki Bella won't be the only woman dropping him this year. Suddenly, Andrade "Cien" Almas and Zelina Vega show up. Zelina says both Cena and Becky are old news and that the McMahons promised a fresh start with new faces, but all she sees is an older face in John Cena. As for Becky Lynch, all she sees is a broken face. She then introduces herself and Andrade "Cien" Almas to John Cena, and says that 2019 will be "the year of tranquilo." John Cena proposes that Almas and Zelina face him and Becky in a tag team match right now. Almas and Zelina accept the challenge.

John Cena and Becky Lynch beat Zelina Vega and Andrade "Cien" Almas after Becky Lynch tosses John Cena out of the ring and counters a schoolkid pin from Zelina Vega with the Dis-Arm-Her. After the match, Becky Lynch tells John Cena "you can't see me" when Cena offers to shake her hand.

Backstage, The Miz meets with Shane McMahon and thanks him for giving the idea of being a tag team a chance last week, then brings out an easel and initially proposes some new Miz-inspired looks. Shane then builds on the idea as an excuse to get away from The Miz.

Backstage, WWE COO Triple H congratulates Asuka on becoming SmackDown Women's Champion before asking her who she considers deserving of a title shot. Asuka says she will fight anyone because nobody is ready for her. Charlotte Flair suddenly shows up and says that if it weren't for "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey, she would have won. Carmella shows up, saying she has beaten her and Asuka twice. Becky Lynch shows up and says she is the only option. Triple H says everyone has made good points, and says it will all be taken under advisement until the McMahons reach a decision.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles beats Randy Orton, Samoa Joe, Rey Mysterio and Mustafa Ali to face "The New" Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble.
