Generation NXT - NXT recap for June 22, 2021

Before the next match, Adam Cole mentions his match with Kyle O'Reilly at Great American Bash before mentioning tonight's match with a self-appointed opponent. Cole says he will not pick his own opponent, and will not follow the rules simply because Samoa Joe is here. He tells Joe that he is king around here, and says that when he embarrasses Kyle O'Reilly, he will be the greatest NXT Superstar of all time. Suddenly, Carmelo Hayes shows up and says if anyone will change Cole's mind, it will be him. When Cole asks how, Hayes says "Ruthless aggression" and slaps him.

Adam Cole beats Carmelo Hayes.

In footage from earlier today, Franky Monet, Jessi Kamea and Aliyah talk about their matches tonight when Robert Stone shows up. Franky says it will be a good night for all of them.

Backstage, Mackenzie Mitchell interviews Zoey Stark, who says she saved Io Shirai because she gave her her big break when she started in NXT, and wanted to return the favor. Io Shirai shows up and says that while she respects Zoey, she does not like her. Zoey says this is all she needs.

We hear from LA Knight, who says he does not need "an old man" like "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase riding his coattails, then says that Cameron Grimes is an idiot for caring more about DiBiase than the Million Dollar Championship. He says that the drop that Cameron Grimes took from the ladder will be nothing compared to when he drops him on his head.

Johnny Gargano and Austin Theory head to the ring. Gargano says that there is new management in town, which means that there needs to be a new NXT Champion. He says that Karrion Kross is not needed, and that a handsome, hard-working and respectable family man like himself should be champion. He says that during the 57 days he was NXT Champion, NXT thrived and was the best it had ever been, and at TakeOver, he proved that Karrion Kross is not on his level, saying he outclassed him every time they were in the ring together. Gargano also says everybody knows he can outwrestle Karrion Kross on his worst day, then Pete Dunne and Oney Lorcan show up. Dunne says Gargano must be mad if he thinks he is #1 contender over him, then tells Theory to shut up. Gargano says Lorcan and Dunne are trying to start chaos, then says there is a new way to do things and they do not take part in hijinx anymore. Gargano says Dunne and Lorcan will not get a fight from them, then he and Theory leave. As they do, Theory tells Dunne he is watching him, and Dunne twists Theory's fingers for his efforts.

In footage from earlier today, Cameron Grimes gives people some money in a change of heart, then Ari Sterling jokes that Cameron Grimes came back from the nursing home. Grimes punches him out for disrespecting "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase.

Backstage, Mackenzie Mitchell interviews Adam Cole, saying that what he did to Camelo Hayes is what he will do to Kyle O'Reilly at Great American Bash. General Manager William Regal shows up and reminds Cole not to promote Samoa Joe. Cole says he finds it surprising that Regal has not reprimanded Samoa Joe, then says he will do him a favor and get out of his hair, then proceeds to leave the arena.

We see the battery meter at 31%.

Cole and O'reilly brawl at the announce table, and referees and security have to step in and separate both men. As Samoa Joe directs traffic, three men in track suits attack KUSHIDA.
