Generation NXT - NXT recap for July 28, 2026

Grayson Waller makes a surprising return to start tonight's show. He talks about his debut, his match at WrestleMania 40, and says that something changed after that and the last two years became an embarrassment. He says he spent "240 lbs. of idiot" on his back making someone relevant again to the point that people chanted for them, and says that person (who is Austin Theory) is still allergic to the microphone. He then mentions his time in The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) without specifically mentioning them, saying he dressed for a funeral and the only thing dying was his career. He then says "It's a new day" and he is now in the best shape of his life, and says he needs to conquer some demons, one of which is the NXT Championship. He says that without the title, he has been treated like "a Netflix break comedy act" instead of the future of the industry, then addresses Mike Santana - under his new name of Cruz Montana - saying people will stop caring about him in six weeks. Grayson says he is not impressed with Montana, saying that being the best in Total Nonstop Action is like being the best basketball player in the YMCA. He also dares Tony D'Angelo to face him, saying that he has nobody left to face him. When told to wrap the promo up, Grayson Waller says that Shawn Michaels can send of his guys if he has a problem. He says that the NXT roster is soft, complacent and happy to be here, then says the only people ready for the main roster is the women's division. He then says some people put "NXT" in their social media bio just to waste their career in medical and that some of the indie talent are a bunch of charisma vacuums the moment they have a microphone, then says Shawn is smiling because he is telling the truth. Grayson says he is going to take the title, the division and any opportunity anybody else is supposed to have, because he is finally starting to remember who he is. His microphone then gets cut off. Grayson then gets in front of a camera just to say that he just took an opportunity and that everyone's cage is black. The show cuts to black immediately.

Backstage, Myles Borne and Tavion Heights talk about Grayson Waller before focusing on business. Saquon leaves, and Kelani Jordan shows up and tells Montana that NXT is an unsafe working environment. Montana leaves as soon as Kelani turns her back.

Backstage, General Manager Robert Stone meets with The Vanity Project (Brady Baylor, Ricky Smokes, Jackson Drake, Myka Lockwood), who mention that Myles Borne and Tavion Heights are not on their level and that Jackson Drake will soon be NXT Champion. Keanu leaves before Stone gets a call from Grayson Waller, and Stone tells Grayson to return to the building because they are not finished.

We hear from Lola Vice, who says that Kendal Grey has no idea what she is getting into with their NXT Underground match like she does. Backstage, Thea Hail meets with Jaida Parker and talks about last week, and Jaida thanks Thea for having her back when she is not the easiest person in the locker room to deal with. Thea returns the favor, then says that they will have a tag match with Nattie and Karmen Petrovic next week. Jaida Parker looks forward to it, and says that she has Thea's back after being the most trustworthy person in the locker room.

Myles Borne retains the NXT North American Championship against Kam Hendrix after Tavion Heights stops Mason Rook from interfering, allowing Borne to kick out of the Showtime Kick and hit Borne Again to win and retain. Mike Santana - now going by the name Cruz Montana - heads to the ring. He declares that he is officially a WWE Superstar, then admits that there were times that he would not see tomorrow, as he came up in some of the toughest neighborhoods in New York City. He says that every day was a fight and a struggle to survive, and while he was no saint and made mistakes he would regret while he fought the man in the mirror, he wanted to be the man his daughter would be proud to call "father." Montana then talks about how he was told he reached his ceiling as a tag team wrestle, he started winning as a solo wrestler and rebuilt his career one step at a time. He says that he appreciates what Total Nonstop Action did for him. He then says that he stands here today as a WWE Superstar, and says that was not given to him. He says he is here not to give a spot, but to take a spot, and he plans to be NXT Champion. Montana then gives props to Grayson Waller's promo at the start of the show, then says that they can fight at any YMCA he wants before Tony D'Angelo shows up. D'Angelo welcomes Montana to NXT, interrupting Montana like Montana did to him last week to introduce himself properly before talking about how so many free agents have showed up and talked about how they will run NXT. D'Angelo says he believes Montana, but tells him the spot of NXT Champion is taken until further notice, but Montana has none of this and tells D'Angelo he will show him how he takes that spot. All of a sudden, Montana is shoved into D'Angelo from behihind, and Grayson escapes from Dead to Rights before avoiding a clothesline from Montana meant for him, causing Montana to hit D'Angelo instead.
