Total Bellas Island - Total Bellas recap for April 16, 2020

In Phoenix, Arizona, Brie and Nikki go to a wellness spa trip with Kathy and JJ. JJ sneaks out during meditation and heads to the bar, and Brie, Nikki and Kathy join him there.

Later that night, the four of them head to a restaurant. Kathy brings up that today would have been Nana and Pop-Pop's 64th anniversary, and that Nana still celebrates the anniversary. Brie tells Kathy that she and Brie want to head to Mexicali, and asks Kathy to help take care of Birdie. When Kathy hears that Brie and Nikki want to get to know their father, Kathy is not enthused, but she agrees to take care of Birdie.

At Brie and Bryan's house, Brie and Nikki get ready for the trip to Mexicali with gifts for their younger half-siblings. Artem feels that Nikki is very nervous and feels that Nikki bringing him along is a big deal. Along the way, Brie and Nikki visit their old elementary school in Brawley, and even check out the house near the school where their old babysitter Mona lives. They then go to the house where they grew up, which becomes a little hard on Kathy, as it opens a few old wounds from her past.

The Bella family and Artem make it to Nana's house. Nana gets to know Artem, and everyone has dinner while they are there. Brie, Nikki and Artem then head to Mexicali while Kathy and Birdie stay behind at Nana's house.

In Mexicali, Brie, Nikki and Jonathan meet Brie and Nikki's father Jonathan and his family. As Brie and Nikki look through a photo album, Jonathan mentions that he has been re-married for 15 years. Artem takes the idea of Jonathan being his future father-in-law a little seriously.

Brie, Nikki, Artem, and Jonathan and his wife Ana have dinner in a Mexican restaurant. Jonathan says he has come a long way since he and Kathy divorced, and that he does not want to go back to the past. Brie mentions the autobiography that she and Nikki are writing, but Jonathan is reluctant to talk about the past.

Brie, Nikki and Artem look at a Mexican candy store. While there, Brie and Nikki get to meet Jonathan's three children from his second marriage. Brie realizes that she cannot bring up memories of the past or the book with her father again, as she does not want to ruin the relationship with her father that she has just rekindled. Brie and Nikki bring some gifts for the kids, then Jonathan takes Brie and Nikki aside to ask them to visit his oldest daughter Alexia's school to prove to everyone there that Alexia - who is proud of what Brie and Nikki have done - is related to Brie and Nikki, as nobody believes Alexia and bully her for it. When Kathy calls, Nikki tells Kathy that she and Artem are staying in Mexicali while Brie is coming back to Nana's house alone, Kathy says she did not go on the trip to be a babysitter while Brie and Nikki went out to find their roots.

Brie, Nikki and Artem head to Alexia's school to surprise Alexia.

In Brawley, Brie, Nikki and Artem talk about their time in Mexicali with Kathy, who is not really enthused to hear about it and would rather that Brie and Nikki would get everything out of their system. Kathy has to explain herself, saying she doesn't want to hear about it all the time. This starts an argument, and it becomes clear that Kathy does not want to re-open old wounds. The car ride home becomes awkward and quiet.

Back at Kathy's house in Phoenix, Brie and Nikki show up for a family meeting. Kathy wants Brie and Nikki to get their feelings from when they were growing up off their chest. Brie credits Kathy for being a "supermom" and a great mom - something that Jonathan even admits - and that she and Nikki want her to feel great, yet at the same time, there are some negative things that they have to deal with. JJ says he was scared of Jonathan, but not of Kathy, and tells her that nothing that happened between her and Jonathan was her fault. Nikki wishes that Kathy handled things between herself and Jonathan differently, as she feels that her childhood has caused her not to have trust in men when it comes to relationships. Nikki also brings up the feeling of having to walk on eggshells from trying to rekindle her relationship with her dad while trying to maintain her relationship with Kathy. Kathy reads a letter that she wrote to herself where she apologizes for everything Brie, Nikki and JJ went through and takes responsibility for everything that happened, and expresses how proud she is of her three children.
