New Year's Smash, Night One - Dynamite recap for January 6, 2021

Chris Jericho guests on commentary for tonight's show.

The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) and SoCal Uncensored ("The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) beat The Acclaimed (Max Caster and Anthony Bowen) and TheHybrid2 (Angelico and Jack Evans) in an eight-man tag match. After the match, Frankie Kazarian says that this is a hell of a way to start a year, then doubles down on his and Daniels' promises to break up if they ever lose again before saying that this will never happen. Daniels tells The Young Bucks that they have their backs except when they are in the ring for the AEW World Tag Team Championships, as they want to beat the best tag team on the planet for the tag team titles.

Jon Moxley shows up for the first time since losing the AEW World Championship. He says that everyone is expecting him to curse up a storm and complain about his title loss, but he says that this is a cruel and unforgiving sport and that one can be on the bad end of a bad duel, and all one can do it take it on the chin, and until then, you plant your feet in the ground, grit your teeth, stare adversity in the eye and never back down. Moxley says he is not going anywhere, and as for Kenny Omega and Don Callis (the latter of whom he says looks like a used car salesman), he says that he sees things in black and white and he has zero tolerance for "shitty people," and that he should beat Omega and Callis to death with a bloody crowbar. He says that tonight, the AEW World Championship that he fought to protect the integrity of is on the line, and Rey Fenix has clawed and scratched with reckless abandon for thirteen years to get a shot. Moxley then says it is not his place to mess with another man's destiny, then tells Omega that he will never be safe and that he will get even and then some, for when he says he will do something, he will do it, and for when he has a responsibility, he will uphold it, and for when he makes a commitment, he sees it through no matter how long it takes, as he will be in Omega's blind spot and lurking over his shoulder like the Boogeyman and Omega will one day look in the eyes of the Devil and beg for mercy when he realizes that he crossed the wrong guy.

Backstage, Dasha Gonzalez interviews Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy. Chuck says that according to the doctor, Trent will be out for four or five months with a torn pectoral muscle. Suddenly, Miro, "Superbad" Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford show up, and Miro tells Chuck that the four or five months will be worse for Chuck than they will be for Trent, as Trent is his and Orange's leader and needs to stand up for himself, then says he can be his best friend as long as he is his young boy. Chuck refuses to lower himself for Miro, then proposes that they face each other in the ring next week. Miro says he thought Chuck would never ask, and raises the stakes by stating that if Chuck loses, he will be Miro's young boy until after the wedding. Chuck accepts, saying "whatever makes you leave faster." Miro says Chuck is stupider than he looks, and tells him he will see him next week.

Wardlow beats Jake Hager. Both men fist bump after the match.

Backstage, Private Party (Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy) start off 2021 with gin, and Snoop Dogg shows up with juice. Matt Hardy shows up with contracts for Private Party to sign and says that he will tap their potential, and while he charges a 30% fee, it will be worth it. After Private Party make sure that everything is taken care of, they sign. Matt Hardy tells them that they will still have their third-party things such as Cameo, then says he will get everything squared away with the lawyers.

Tony Schiavone moderates a weigh-in between "The Machine" Brian Cage and Darby Allin for next week's TNT Championship match. Allin has the new design of the belt with a black strap with him. Taz complains about Cage having to weigh in first because he is the challenger, then Cage gets on the scale and weighs in at 272 lbs. Allin then gets on the scale and weighs in at 170 lbs. Taz says that there is only a 100-pound weight difference because Allin is wearing clothes, then Allin takes Schiavone's microphone and says that while this feud has been in the making for 9 months, it has really been in the making for 27 years because he has been "dealing with shit all his life from people like [Taz]," then gets to "the fun part: by picking a fight with Team Taz (Taz, Cage, "Absolute" Ricky Starks, Powerhouse Hobbs). Taz tells Schiavone to leave the ring, but as soon as he talks to Darby, the lights go out and Sting shows up from the entrance tunnel to stand with Darby Allin instead of the back, outsmarting Team Taz once again as they want for Sting near the side of the ramp. Taz says he is sick of this and sick of Sting, and promises that there will be a new TNT Champion next week, then Darby and Sting have another brief staredown.

Backstage, MJF meets with an angry Jake Hager, telling him that he is a winner because nobody is half the athlete Hager is, that not everybody can say that got in and out of the ring for a wrestling match and that he is still undefeated in the Octagon. Hager tells MJF that he is cool for checking on him, then tells him to leave. MJF tells Hager he is proud of him and that Hager should be proud of himself, too.

Backstage, Alex Marvez interviews Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy, Marko Stunt, Luchasaurus). Marko says that Jurassic Express is full of fun, but right now, they are on a quest for the tag team titles. Suddenly, FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) and Tully Blanchard show up, and Wheeler tells Marko that he brings nothing to the table and sits on the outside as a glorified mascot while Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus do the dirty work. After Wheeler calls Marko "worthless," Harwood says that -1 is right and that he is a loser. Marko challenges FTR to a tag team match against him and Jungle Boy next week, and Harwood calls this match-up "comparing a Fiat to a Ferrari" before accepting the challenge. After Tully says something about worrying about a flashback, Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus have to hold Marko back.

"The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes comes out with Snoop Dogg to a Snoop Dogg remix of his entrance theme before the next match.

"The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes beats Matt Sydal. During the match, Cody inadvertently punches Serpentico in the face, and after the match, Luther and Serpentico attack Cody. Cody and Sydal fight off Luther and Serpentico, then Snoop Dogg hits Serpentico with a top rope splash and Cody makes the pinfall.

Hikaru Shida retains the AEW Women's World Championship against Abadon despite Abadon dragging Shida underneath the ring and biting her in the neck.

Next week: Tay Conti vs. Serena Deeb for the NWA Women's World Championship!

Backstage, Tay Conti tells Serena Seeb that while she has a lot of respect for her, she is coming for the NWA Women's World Championship, for she has martial arts skills and The Dark Order will be behind her next week.

Next week: The Elite in action! PAC vs. Eddie Kingston! The Inner Circle's New Year's resolutions! The Waiting Room makes its Dynamite debut with special guest "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes!

Kenny Omega retains the AEW World Championship against Rey Fenix. After the match, Don Callis says that the fans have witnessed history, then gets a messae from backstage that something is happening backstage. On the video screen, Eddie Kingston, The Butcher and The Blade are seen attacking Penta El Zero M and PAC. Callis then warns Rey Fenix that a One Winged Angel into the scrap heap of history is coming for him and that he will not be saved, but Jon Moxley shows up and strikes Omega with a barbed wire baseball bat. Suddenly, The Good Brothers ("The Big LG" Doc Gallows and "Machine Gun" Karl Anderson) show up wearing the Impact World Tag Team Championships on their waists and gang up on Moxley, hitting him with the Magic Killer. Omega and The Good Brothers take the boots to Moxley, then Omega hits Moxley with the barbed wire baseball bat. Wrestlers from the front row rush the ring to fight off The Good Brothers and Omega, but they are all laid out. The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) show up and plead with The Good Brothers and Omega, and when The Varisty Blondes (Griff Garrison and Brian Pillman Jr.) hold Omega from behind, they get superkicked by The Young Bucks. Omega and The Good Brothers then give the "Two Sweet" hand signal, and The Young Bucks join in to end the show.
