Layin' da SmackDown - SmackDown recap for April 29, 1999

The show starts with WWF co-owner Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon heading to the ring flanked by local law enforcement. Vince says he is extremely proud to stand in front of the crowd tonight as well as his daughter Stephanie. He is proud of his personal accomplishments, but not so much about his business ones. He also admits that he has been an asshole after the crowd chants "asshole," and hopes that he can change. He says it is true that he has been ruthless and uncaring of others, and even stepped on - and crushed - a few toes. Sometimes it has been for business and other times at the expense of his family, and he takes the first step towards reclaiming control of his own company. He says he will be "a competitive S.O.B.," but he will take time to smell the roses and thank those individuals who have made him who he is. He thanks "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock for his loyalty and helping Stephanie out of the boiler room a few weeks ago. He thanks The Big Show for coming to Stephanie's aid last week, and he also thanks "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Stephanie takes the microphone and thanks them as well, and says she was taken against her will, stripped of her clothes and dressed in a black gown for an unholy wedding. She says she has never felt so powerless and violated in all her life, as The Undertaker kept touching her and whispering in her ears that she was his and that there was nothing she could do it. She thanks Austin again from the bottom of her heart and soul, then says she hopes The Undertaker burns in Hell. Vince then makes a promise to Austin, but before he can make that promise, The Corporation shows up. WWF co-owner Shane McMahon wants to know why Vince is here at first, but then asks if they would have been there for Stephanie if something bad happened to them. He also rips into Vince for apologizing about how he ran business and for thanking "Stone Cold" Steve Austin for saving Stephanie, and that he doesn't give a rat's ass about Stephanie, Austin or Vince. Vince tells Shane he can "give a rat's about this," and is about to smack Shane before Chyna and "Triple H" Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Chyna step in. Shane tells them he's got this, and tells Vince to get his attitude out of his face before he slaps the wrinkles out of his, and tells him and Stephanie to leave the ring. Vince tells Shane that one day he may be a man, but tonight, he is acting like a petulant little boy. Vince and Stephanie leave the ring and head to the back, then Shane gets down to business. He says there have been two thorns in his side as of late: The Rock and Austin. Since they have a history with each other and cannot get along, he puts them on the same side in a tag team match against two volunteers. The first is Triple H, but when it comes to the second one, he asks "Are there any takers?" Suddenly, the lights go out and The Undertaker shows up on the TitanTron and curses Austin for ruining last week's ceremony to make Stephanie his bride and servant, and says Austin stuck his nose where it did not belong. He says that last week, Austin played spoiler, but this week, he will play judge, jury and executioner. Shane makes The Undertaker the second volunteer, and asks the crowd if they can feel the power of Shane McMahon. He says it can happen, because he said so.

Jeff Jarrett and Debra are looking for Owen Hart backstage. Meanwhile, Owen Hart is back in the Blue Blazer outfit, saying that the World Wrestling Federation needs a superhero, and that tonight, he is going to bring them one.

Before the next match, Val Venis says that tonight, he invites the ladies to invest in "The Big Valbowski's" mutual fun, as it is always up more than it is down, and with this fun, there will never be an early withdrawal. When Jeff Jarrett shows up, he says he has no idea where Owen Hart is and it pisses him off, but he can consider him his replacement. Before the match begins, The Blue Blazer shows up and trips Venis up from behind, and the match begins.

The Blue Blazer beats Val Venis when Debra distracts the referee. Venis gets a Fisherman's Suplex in, but Jeff Jarrett gets in the ring and kicks Venis in the crotch, giving the Blazer the win. After the match, Nicole Bass shows up and tells Val Venis "you owe me." Venis hightails it to the back as Nicole comes after him. After Venis and Nicole leave, The Godfather shows up with his hos to make good on the stipulation from the match earlier this week on Raw, and fights off both the Blazer and Jarrett. The Godfather tries to get Debra to join him, but Jarrett and The Blazer fight back and double-team The Godfather.

The Rock is backstage. He says he will have to "make a bunch of monkey asses famous" tonight.

Kevin Kelly interviews The Blue Blazer. He says he is back in the WWF because the WWF needs the Blue Blazer back. When Kevin calls him Owen, The Blazer asks who Owen is, then says he is looking for him, too. He says the WWF has become deplorable, and says there is too much cleavage. He also says Val Venis is deplorable. He says the WWF needs a superhero like him who protects good from evil. He then tells "the little Blazers" to take their vitamins, say their prayers and drink their milk. (Fun fact: Faarooq is seen clear as day walking by in the background.)

Big Show beats Test. During the match, it is announced that WWF co-owner Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon have just exited the building in disgust around the time that The Big Boss Man shows up. After the match, Boss Man gets in the ring, and Big Show almost chases him around the ring. As Big Show leaves, Boss Man gets back in the ring and hits Test in the head with his nightstick. Big Show runs back into the ring and chases Boss Man to the back.

The Rock shows up. He says that WWF co-owner Shane McMahon and "Triple H" Hunter Hearst Helmsley decide to check themselves in to the Smackdown Hotel earlier this week, and tells them they will check in, but they won't check out without his fist in their mouths and his foot up their asses. As for "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, they will fight the fight, but they are not partners, buddies or friends, and if Austin gets in his way, he'll shove his horns up his ass. Austin shows up, and he tells The Rock he will always be some punk kid who spits out nursery rhymes. Austin then tells The Rock he will knock his horns off his head, wipe his ass and put him on a barbecue grill. Suddenly, Shane McMahon shows up and says it is perfect that they cannot get along, as his plan is getting bigger and better as he speaks. The lights then go out, and The Undertaker shows up and stands side by side with Shane. He asks if they understand and if they can see the power, and spells it out a little bit more. Suddenly, The Corporation and The Ministry of Darkness show up on the stage at the same time. Shane introduces The Rock and Austin - and the WWF - to The Corporation Ministry, and tells The Rock and Austin to get it together and change their strategy.

Kevin Kelly interviews Kane and X-Pac. X-Pac says that if Kane wants wants things to be unpredictable, then unpredictability is what we are going to get.

D'Lo Brown beats Droz by disqualification after Prince Albert gets involved in the match. After the match, Ivory runs to the back, and Prince Alberto is about to give D'Lo an impromptu tongue piercing when Ivory returns with "Sexual Chocolate" Mark Henry, who has not been seen in some time. Mark Henry fights off Droz and Prince Albert to make the save for D'Lo.

Kevin Kelly interviews The New Age Outlaws ("Road Dogg" Jesse James and "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn). Road Dogg says they have "champs" written all over them. Road Dogg says it may get a little wacky with X-Pac being a close, personal friend, but Billy Gunn tells Road Dogg that are no friends when it comes to the tag team titles.

X-Pac and Kane retain the WWF Tag Team Championships against The New Age Outlaws ("Road Dogg" Jesse James and "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn) as Gunn lifts X-Pac over his head only for X-Pac to come down on him for the pinfall when Road Dogg accidentally trips him.

"Road Dogg" Jesse James and "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn argue backstage over their match to the point that officials have to keep Road Dogg away from Billy Gunn.

Dok Hendrix interviews The Brood (Gangrel, Edge, Christian) in the ring. Gangrel says The Brood spoke by their own choice, which was forbidden by The Undertaker. When they came to the WWF, they created the guidance and the guiding light to show them the way. However, The Undertaker's thoughts do not match their own, and in the darkness, they seek a much different light. Gangrel says they live their collective lifestyle in who they are and what they believe in, in the search of the mystery of life in the hereafter. The power is what they seek, and it is within all of us, and they just have to unleash it. Dok Hendrix says some people think The Brood are "off the charts." Edge says they will understand, as understanding is just a matter of time as the power lies within them and it is up to them to find it. They are who they are: the unholy trio. They will become what they will follow. Those who believe will follow, while those who don't will merely exist. Edge then tells Dok Hendrix to beware and take care, because the freaks will come out at night. Dok says he has no idea what The Brood is smoking, but he says it is a gimmick and that they are just drawing attention. Gangrel doesn't care what Hendrix thinks, and says they are who they are and know what they are capable of. He then says that "Michael" (a reference to Dok Hendrix's real name, as Dok Hendrix is really Michael P.S. Hayes of The Fabulous Freebirds) is the one who is confused. The Brood then jumps Dok Hendrix, who is then the victim of a blood bath.

"Bad Ass" Billy Gunn is seen hunting down X-Pac backstage.

Kevin Kelly interviews "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock backstage. Shamrock says Bradshaw has been a pain in his backside, and tonight, he will pay for what he did earlier this week on Raw. Shamrock says he was born in the streets and fought in the streets for space. He plans to break Bradshaw's arms, legs and spirit before he beats the crap out of him some more, as he is ready to lay it all on the line.

"The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock attacks Bradshaw from behind before the Street Fight begins.

"The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock beats Bradshaw in a Street Fight after choking him out with a baseball bat. Shamrock has to be pulled off Bradshaw after the match by referees and officials, whom Shamrock scares out of the ring. Shamrock ends up snapping and hitting Sgt. Slaughter with the bat.

Kevin Kelly interviews Mankind in the Boiler Room. After Mankind introduces himself to those who have never watched WWF before, saying he sits in boiler rooms because he likes the ambiance, that he wears a sweaty leather masks to sell a few dolls, that he wears a shirt and tie because it looks damn good, and that he shoves a sock that looks a like him down his opponents' gullets because he can and because the fans enjoy it, "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn can be heard yelling at X-Pac wondering where he is at. Mankind responds to this by simply saying "What a whiner."

Backstage in WWF co-owner Shane McMahon's dressing room, Shane is seen talking to The Corporate Ministry, saying that "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and The Rock will feel The Corporate Ministry's wrath.

Mankind beats The Big Boss Man with the Mandible Claw after Test and Big Show keep Boss Man from running away from the match.

"Bad Ass" Billy Gunn attacks X-Pac in the locker room. Kane quickly makes the save, and Billy Gunn runs away.

The Corporate Ministry ("Triple H" Hunter Hearst Helmsley and The Undertaker) vs. The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin ends when The Corporate Ministry attacks The Rock and Austin. Test, The Big Show and "The World's Most Dangerous Man" run into the ring and clean house, and the match turns into a brawl. Triple H and The Rock take their brawl into the crowd, while The Undertaker choke slams Austin. WWF co-owner Vince McMahon shows up as WWF co-owner Shane McMahon tosses a chair to The Undertaker, and he clocks Shane before trying to stop The Undertaker from hitting Austin with a steel chair only to have the chair smacked into his head. Austin hits The Undertaker with a Stone Cold Stunner, and Shane starts punching an unconscious Vince. Austin approaches Shane, flips him off, gets his hands on him and hits him with a Stunner. Austin then drinks a few beers and uses some of it to revive Vince to end the show.
