SummerSlam 1997 - The Results

The show starts with the American national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.

Mankind beats Hunter Hearst Helmsley in a Steel Cage Match by climbing out of the cage just before Chyna can drag Helmsley out. Before Mankind climbs out, he climbs back to the top of the cage, rips his shirt open (to reveal a very crudely drawn heart underneath) then hits an elbow drop from the top of the cage in a tribute to "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka. After the match, Dude Love's theme plays. Mankind taps his foot to the music, then manages to get up.

Todd Pettengill interviews the Governor of New Jersey, Christie Todd Whitman, who is accompanied to the ring by The Headbangers (Thrasher and Mosh) and WWE President Gorilla Monsoon. Whitman is thanked for her efforts to removing the excise taxes on pro wrestling in the state with and awarded an honorary WWF Championship.

Tiger Jeet Singh and his son Tiger Ali Singh are see in the audience.

Earlier today, a WWF beach party took place in The Meadowlands Arena's parking lot, where 20,000 fans were on hand.

Before the next match, Brian Pillman says that Marlena pines to see him in a dress, but he's not that easy and Marlena will have to wine and dine him first.

Goldust beats Brian Pillman after Pillman resists a Sunset Flip pinfall only to slapped in the face with a purse by Marlena. Marelna places the mannequin - dress and all - in the ring, which Pillman immediately destroys after the match.

20,213 fans are in attendance for tonight's event, a record for the Continental Airlines Arena.

Before the next match, The Legion of Doom (Road Warrior Animal and Road Warrior Hawk) say that The Godwinns (Henry O. and Phineas I. Godwinn) have done everything they could to them, and that tonight, they will get revenge.

The Legion of Doom (Road Warrior Animal and Road Warrior Hawk) beat The Godwinns (Henry O. and Phineas I. Godwinn) with a double-team spike piledriver to Henry O. Godwinn. During the match, it is announced that Marlena and Brian Pillman are currently on Option 5 of the WWF Superstar Line. Also, legendary tag team manager Captain Lou Albano is seen in the front row.

We see footage of Your SummerSlam Million Dollar Chance contest finalist Ryan Chadick and his family and contest finalist Patrick Stevenson making their way to East Rutherford, New Jersey.

For the chance to choose a key and unlock The Undertaker's casket to win one million dollars, Ryan Chadick picks #52 and Patrick Stevenson picks #13. Todd Pettengill calls another number to give someone another chance at a million dollars, but the first number does not pick and the second number is disconnected. They finally reach Michael Simmons (who isn't watching SummerSlam as his cable company doesn't carry pay-per-view), who picks key #33, which does not work. Michael does, however, win a $5,000 U.S. savings bond for answering the phone. For another call, Rebecca Cohen from Manchester, Missouri picks #14, which also does not work but gets her the complementary $5,000 U.S. savings bond for trying. Ryan Chadick tries his key, but it doesn't work. (He does, however, get a hug from Sable.) Patrick Stevenson's key does not work, either, and nobody wins the million dollars. The winning key is revealed to be #3.

The British Bulldog beats "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock by disqualification after Shamrock loses his cool and hits Bulldog with the can of dog food on the commentary table after Bulldog takes some dog food and throws it into Shamrock's face. Shamrock keeps pushing the referee away as he attacks Bulldog before choking Bulldog out in the middle of the ring. It takes officials a few minutes to get Shamrock to break the hold, and when he does, he hits Pat Patterson, Gerald Brisco and two referees with belly-to-back suplexes.

Todd Pettengill interviews "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, who says that there is nothing between him and Bret "The Hit Man" Hart, and that anything that was between them was settled last year. He is here to call the WWF Championship match down the middle.

Los Boricuas (Savio Vega, Miguel Perez, Jose Estrada Jr., Jesus Castillo) beats The Disciples of Apocalypse (Crush, Skull, 8-Ball, Chainz) after Ahmed Johnson puts one member of The Disciples in the Pearl River Plunge on concrete floor near the ring that he exposed himself. During the match, it is announced that "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock is currently on Option 5 of the WWF Superstar Line, then The Nation of Domination (Faarooq, D'Lo Brown, Kama Mustafa, Ahmed Johnson) show up through the crowd. After the match, both teams as well as the Nation all brawl with one another, and Crush tries to run somebody over with his motorcycle while referees and officials try to get some control.

Michael Cole interviews "Stone Cold" Steve Austin on the way to the ring, but Austin tells Cole to get out of his way.

"Stone Cold" Stee Austin beats Owen Hart in a Kiss My Ass Match to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship and earn his first WWF singles title, though it is not without condequences. During the match, Owen hits Austin with a piledriver, which he botches. This leaves Austin lying for a few moments as the force of the piledriver breaks his neck, but Austin is able to roll-up a cocky Owen Hart with a schoolboy to win the Intercontinental title. Three referees have to help Austin up and to the back, but not before Austin raises the Intercontinentla title in victory.

Before the next match, Bret "The Hit Man" Hart tells everyone to listen to the Canadian national anthem, O Canada, before dedicating the match to all of his fellow Canadians and fans all over the world who feel the same way he does about America and Americans.

Bret "The Hit Man" Hart beats The Undertaker to win the WWF Championship for a fifth time in a match with "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee and keep his ability to wrestle in the United States alive. During the match, it is announced that "Stone Cold" Steve Austin has been taken to a local hospital after his match, and is now having difficulty in walking and has lost feeling in his hands. Also, Paul Bearer makes an appearance as Bret has The Undertaker in a Figure Four Leg Lock, and 'Taker is livid. He eventually attacks Bearer, and two referees show up to escort Bearer back to the back. After this, Brain Pillman and Owen Hart show up to watch the match from ringside only to be ejected when they get beaten up by 'Taker, which sidetracks Shawn to the point that The Undertaker gets angry with him, and Shawn has to remind him that he is the referee in the match. Near the end, Bret hits 'Taker with a steel chair and tosses it to the corner, and Shawn eventually confronts Hart over the chair. Bret says "Fuck you" to Shawn and spits in his face, and Shawn, with the steel chair still in his hands, strikes at Bret with it only for Bret to duck so Shawn accidentally hits The Undertaker in the head with it instead. Shawn, knowing what he has done, makes the three count when Bret makes the pinfall and immediately heads to the back while Bret celebrates alone in the ring before being joined by Owen, Pillman and The British Bulldog.
